Question - My truck has recently developed a knocking noise. Sounds like someone is tapping on the oil pan. Happends in the morning when it is cold outside. Disappears after a minute or so. Oil light goes off after about 3 seconds. I'm running synthetic 5w-30 oil, but have some unknown origin oil filter that I bought off of AB (minimum order, uh). Is it possible that the anti-drainback has failed? Should I plan on a rebuild anytime soon? BTW - It's in the 50's today & no knocking. So - it sounds like a viscosity thing? Any insight? Dirty oil pickup? Thanks Joe |

Year? Milage? How many miles have you been running synth? Regular oil changes? Goes away after a minute? Yikes. 3 second oil sight seems O.K. So it knocks when it's warmer, right? Some years suck worse than others. How soon after you bought the filter did you start to notice the knocking? Well, start there, today. Sorry about the "20 Questions", but "I got'sta know"...click |

Thanks Eric - 96 D1, about 81k, very regular oil changes, running synth since about 55k, does not knock when it is warmer & runs very smoothly after about a minute of warming up. The knock is not too bad but it is noticeable inside the cab - it's probably compounded with valve noise as well! I'm not sure when the knocking started but it has been more noticeable recently - when cold. I wonder if I should just change the oil & add a quality filter like purolator or mobil? joe |
