Oil light came on and so I dropped the pan cleaned everything out and cleaned the oil pickup, it didn't look bad to begin with but I did get some stuff out of it! The light still comes on but I don't feel like I should drive it! I am planning on changing the sensor within the next few days.

If that doesn't solve it what could it be!
Thanks

Could be a bad sensor, bad pump or the top end could be gunked up. You could pull a valve cover and see if it is gunked up. You also should put a pressure gauge on it and see what kind of pressure you are running. If you do a search you will find several postings on the topic. What year and how many miles do you have?

Dave, there was a recall on some 96 Discos relating to an oil pressure switch. Send me the last 8 of your VIN and I'll see if it's still open.

Dave did you clean that pan really well ? And the screen ? The particles that get in there are very small. When you initially started it and ran it was the light off and came on later ? Or was it an issue imediately after putting it back together ?

If you're not getting knocking when the light comes on I would guess that you have a bad sending unit. The light only comes on when the sending unit detects near zero oil pressure and you would be getting knocking.

Well , you would get lifter clatter before you got anything else.. I would definately make sure it has pressure before going to far in it

Yeah, if you have low oil pressure, you could be playing with fire. It may be a sensor, I dunno. but you surely don't want to spin or ruin a bearing, just because you "don't hear anything..."

yeah... your right i am going to try to change the sensor tomorrow, if it isn't raining,

also I looked at where it was the other day and it looks like it's a pain to get at any suggestions on a easy swap?

Dave is it white or black?

The white one means it already had the recall (which was for a leak and not failure)
