Hi again,

I recently replaced my powersteering pump (1 month ago) with a used one. Yesterday A.M. I found that my '96 Disco was very difficult to turn unless the engine was revved more than normal. I checked the fluids and belts, and could not hear any odd noises. Can anyone guess why this is happening? Like I said, the problem is only when driving at lower RPM's, once on the highway or revving my engine (i have a 5-speed) i can get better control and response.

Please Help,

Ryan

Sounds like you should have bought a new power steering pump :-(

Get the pressure checked. I've seen more than one pump replaced when it was internal seals in the steering box.....

Is it a smooth resistance to turning or tight spots?

Lyman,
I believe it is a continual resistance with "tight spots". What does this signify?

do you live in NY?

Yep, I'm an hour north of Albany.

I got stuck by the same problem, but I swapped out the box first. It actually was a seized UPPER STEERING UNIVERSAL.... Pull your steering shaft...and check the u-joints. I'll bet you a Black and Tan that's what it is. I know it sounds far fetched, but that is what the tight spots are as you force it to rotate.... if you jack up the front wheels, turn the wheel full lock to full lock, There will be 3-4 tight spots if a u-joint is bad.

Off-roading this weekend....see events section.

Lyman,

Where oh where was that gorgeous pic taken? That looks like someplace I'd like to visit :-)

Are you the same Lyman that I bought my seat covers from??

That pic was taken on Pheobee Mtn. in the Lower Adirondacks. Pointy mtn near middle of pic is Potash Mtn. We will be winching to the top this Saturday in 2-3 ft of snow....see events section.

If you bought the seat covers at AB, then yes....I've gone my seperate way since.
