OK...

It looks like the same size as the Freelander for one, I like the front, and the flares a bit (I HAVE flares on mine, so that is biased)...

The biggest disappointment in my opinion, other than the IFS/IRS that I think is inevitable is the section between the C and D pillars...I mean, we went from being one of the most glass happy trucks (which i love...I have 12 glass panels in the ´92 and 14 in the ´98 with sun roofs) to a MINIATURE sized 3/4 glass...
That´s just too X-trail for me!

With that said, I´ll prolly get me one for the future mrs :-)

Doesn't do it for me either. Slab sides, Nissan look on front, how do you outfit a real bumper to the front?, tow hooks?, smaller glass, and do I detect IFS all around? RRC / DI looking better all the time.

Alan,
Those are "Roof Sliders". In the event of a rol-over on a hill, you just slide right down the bottom. Makes those 2nd attempts a lot easier.

wow...yuck.

great...thanks land rover, now i am a retro-grouch. it seems the evolution of this species is not toward filling an empty niche, but to leaving an empty one and adding to an already full one of mall trucks and grocery getters.

Ahh I see, roof sliders, what a concept. Will Roverytm be making some heavy duty ones?

Land Rover seems to be busy. Found these gems as well:

>>>These photos are showing for the first time from close by and in full daylight a prototype of the new Range Rover Sport, which is expected to go on sale in 2005. It is a shorter and sportier version of the current Range Rover with more dynamic handling, and is set to rival the likes of BMW X5 and Lexus RX300.

At first a four-door model will be available only, but an additional two-door is expected. It will be powered by a 2.7-liter diesel V-6 with 200 hp, which will also be used in the Jaguar S-Type from this summer on. Several other Jaguar-derived V-6 and V-8 engines are expected.<<<

Pics of rangie sport:

Notice the spare tyre placement on the above pic.

The link below shows a rather interesting freelander:

I have always prided myself on embracing new things. Setting asside my normal fear of change and embracing it instead.

I've tried to find something in this truk that I like and it is too difficult to keep trying.

I'm affraid I, like michael, have become what I despise: a retro-grouch.

So this is what it means to be turning 40 next year.

Long live the Disco 1.

I like the Rangie Sport much more that the new Disco. It would be a nice street only daily driver.

I agree with Mitch (Mitch Williams? The same guy who gave up a 100m (ala Canda) home run to Joe Carter in 1993 ? :-)

That pic is certainly digitized. From the spy shots I have seen, I think the 05 will have the glass between the C-D pillars be integrated with the alpine windows as one continous piece of curved glass. Also, I would imagine the gas cap will remain on the UK (right) side.

As for the roof sliders. LOL!

The RR Sport looks better than the 05 Disco. A good all weather SUV with sporting pretensions is more expected from a RR type product so I can live with the independent suspension, street tires, etc. I would probably buy one over a BMW 5 Series, for instance.

Those exhaust pipes under the rear undercarriage are unfortunate, same as a Acura MDX/Honda Pilot. They look 3-4" off the ground.

I'm still on the retro-grouch side with Victor as far as the 05 Disco goes.

From the first pick it looks like the back of the roof is raised a bit like the current model. I also like the RR sport but it will likely have $10-15k premium over the disco if they are saying it will be priced between the $40k disco and $70k rover. If 03 rovers starts getting close to $45k when these new models come out, that would be my pick. The new F150 interior looks very nice. The new disco needs to be even better.

I know that I'm on the wrong side of the fence here. But I personally like it. I believe it will sell well for LR. My D1 sees quite alot of trail use, and not so much interstate these days. However, the wife's D2 has only seen some dirt on the days I've had to borrow it for work when the D1 was down. I would gladly drive that new DIII in place of her DII, granted it can never be the offroad machine that any older rover can be.
I like it:-)

Just before the new RR was released, LRO did an off-road test comparing the new RR (with IFR) to a stock D-90. If I recall, the RR beat the D-90 in 6 of 8 catagories. Anyone have the article?
So the new Rovers will be able to handle all but the extreme rock crawling. The IFR isn't like the old cross-I beam Bronco, were you'd find yourself laying on your side before you knew it.

I also remember a story about the introduction of the new RR in Australia. It had to be winched out of the mud at it's introduction event. So much for IFR and traction control.

As for these computer control systems added to the new vehicles, do they have a limp home mode? Probably not but why not? Computer systems are cheap. Why not have some level of redundancy. As for the cross-fed IFR air suspension, it's fine when it works but a few years down the road, or sooner, and it's a nightmare. How are you going to retrofit the suspension now. At least on a RRC/38 you can convert to coils. I guess the IFS retro kit could be a solid axle.

Gee, the Disco looks like a Honda Element and the Rangie looks like a freighter out of World War 1. Now if LR just went back and made all their models look like army trucks like the old Series, I'd be a happy guy. Maybe I should start looking a bit closer at those 80's vintage G-wagens that I saw on the Autotrader over the weekend.

I see that FORD (F*cked Over Redone Disco) have completed the LR takeover. First the Range...now the Disco. Why couldn't they gone the way of the Chrysler takeover of Mercedes. You know, now Chrysler cars (Crossfire) look like Mercs. All Fords should like LRs!! Ahh, a perfect world!

It looks like a mixture of the Exploder and the VW bug, with some hints of seriously nasty body lines copied over from the X type Jag. And that's being generous.

LOL re the roof skis though. Will they be rated for the GVWR and come with ETC and HDC?

Looks like LR will be dropping the "Discovery" name:

(08:30 Feb. 19, 2004)
Car News briefs: Land Rover dropping Discovery name; Shelby’s other Cobra

By AUTOWEEK

Land Rover dropping Discovery name in U.S.
Land Rover has discovered that, at least in the United States, its Discovery name doesn’t carry the same go-anywhere meaning and brand value as it does in other parts of the world. As a result, when the all-new, next-generation Discovery SUV arrives on these shores late this year, its Stateside moniker will be Land Rover LR3. Discovery will continue as a nameplate elsewhere in the world where Land Rovers are sold, but in the States the company plans to focus more attention on the established Land Rover marque than on the vehicle’s nameplate.
