Does anyone make a quality dual/twin battery tray for a 97 D1?

Though for a DII, this is a step in the right direction...

Thanks Bill I've read both of those thru. I was hoping someone else has found a quality fabricator for the D1.

On my D1 I just removed the airfilter horn and sat the 2nd batt on the factory shelf already there. I used a GP batt clamp to hols it down.

Same here. It's pretty tight space wise but it works out fine.

Chris,

Where did you relocate the coil to? Im not sure there's enough cable to get to the firewall, so maybe on top of the wheel arch? I have ABS so this may be a problem. I would be interested to know. That pic of ur optima is great. Does it touch the power steering reservoir? or does the optima sit a bit lower?

Thanks
Roly

Yes, exactly. I've seen some others done this way as well. In the photo the coil is just to the left of the air box, right behind the ps res. It's bolted to the wheel arch. The battery is maybe 1/4 below the bottom of the ps res.

Ok, did it. Seems to work well. I fabed a bracket from aluminium and bolted to the inside of the wheel arch. Its interesting to note that this part of the wheel arch does not seem overly strong anyways. However, I have a very sturdy arrangement now with the coil next the airfilter box and the top of the HT lead just below the top of the filter box so its a bit higher than it was. Im still unsure about the ps res as for say a 115Ah batt this may still get in the way. I think they are 200mm tall and I only seem to have about 170 to the bottom of the res.

Chris, do you (or anyone for that matter) have any suggestions about sutable locations for the PS res without major replumbing? Finally what is the general concensus (spelling?) on sucking air over the top of a wet cell batt? I am nervous about the potential fumes...do I need be?

Thanks

Roylh: ARB snorkle. Nuff said.

Honestly, if you have a real need for a second battery, you could also probably use a snorkle. The ARB snorkle actually moves the airbox back a bit and you lose the intake horn.

Gel cell battery eliminates the worry.Better suited for rough ride, no maint., very low fumes, twice the cost though, but worth it.

Does anyone wire the second battery 'marine-like' with an A, B or Both switch? Instead of just parallel or both.

On my '95 D1 I have the ARB snorkle and added an Optima yellow top. I use the second battery to run my ham radio equipment, driving, fog and overhead lights, and electric radiator fans. I have the second battery connected to the first and the charging system through a heavy duty (150 amp) solenoid (looks like a Ford starter solenoid) that is triggered by the ignition coil. When the ignition is turned on, the two batteries are connected and I have double power to the starter. Both batteries can then be charged while driving. When I turn the ignition off, the solenoid opens and isolates the second battery from the stock electrical system. I can still run my overheads and other auxiliary equipment without worrying that I'll be able to start the vehicle later.

Hi Jay,

I have been using a small 2nd batt for a year or so now with simple solenoid connection.

My prob to date is the size of the battery. The snorkle is a good idea admittedly, but I am not in a position to fit one. Im feeding Engel, 2 outlets (light & laptop/shower etc... intermittant use) and the second radio (I would like to also transfer 2 x 100W lights, 1st Radio + GPS to the 2nd batt and get it off the cranker). My main intention is to get some more Ah's. I have had a little 40Ah running for a while. It got down to 11.7 volts??? in one night..so I guess you can see my motivation.

Thanks for all the responses.

Roly

New proud owner of 96 D1 as replacement of 74 Scout II

Need suggestions on locating 2nd yellow top other than in front of air box (as per Chris Robyn's post)due to previous owner's ARB compessor install and custom snorkel plumbing.

Also, is 100 amp alternator stock for D1?

Hmmm...I always smile when I hear 'PO custom plumbing' It conjures images of wasted space and 50mm PVC everywhere. Anyways, the D2 owners seem to remove the washer reservoir and one can buy a prefab tray. Perhaps putting it there with a custom tray might work. If the snorkel plumbing is tidy and discrete moving the compressor may be a good bet as there are prob more places to put that (in behing bumper or something) than a 2nd odessey because of size. or there's always the old "in the back behind the cargo barrier arguement"
fyi my '96 has 100Amp alternator 2

Will,

Congrats and welcome to the Land Rover Owner's Support Group ;-)

Regarding the alternator, the 100 amp is standard, but there has been some discussion in this board about using 3rd party alternators, especially GM, to increase that to significantly higher amperage.

GM seems to be the favourite because of the LR/Buick block, but apparently it requires some customisation of brackets and such.

I'm sure a search for something like "alternator" and "150 amp" would turn up more info.

cheers
Victor

Roly and Victor,

Thanks for the input.

I plan on doing a write up with pictures on the planned dual battery and alternator mod set up for possible post in tech area.

My D1 currently has a Warn HS9500 and 3 Hella 4000's on an SG brush bar. I plan on adding 4 more Hella 4000's on adventure rack + CB + navigation + fridge

Chris, Is that a $G Rivi-nut tool holding that battery in place ? Pretty clever!
