Please advise? I got back from a trip in which my 97 D1 ran fine. I started it the next morning and it would die. When gas pressed it sounded like it was going to backfire but didn't. It would start and fluctuate about 1000 rpms a few times then quit (gas not pressed). The gas tank is full so I ruled out bad gas and all vacuum hoses look to be in place. What should I be looking for?

Mine is doing the same damn thing. I drove back from the lake on the highway, and it was running fine. I went to start it this morning, and it it was revving up and down then it would go real low and die.

So I took it into the dealer today. The master technician has been a good friend of ours for years ( we had a RRC with "problems" ;) so I talked to him about it for a while. He Ran a diagnostic on it.

Fault code description
P0116 - Water temperature sensor - falling temperature fault (driving cycle B)

He said my engine is running too cold. So now I have a new thermostat that I'm going to replace. We'll see if that works.

Hi Matt, Thanks for the info. I recently installed a new thermistat, water pump and all new hoses. Unless I have a faulty new thermostat it might be something else. Please advise if changing yours fixes the problem.

Thanks

Mike

Check fuel pressure at rail. Also may be an intermittent fuel pump problem. Have you changed fuel filter?

YouŽd be surprised how helpful a NEW fuel filter would be...THAT (4$-German made) saved my erratic idle on my 1998 Disco

I recently had my engine overhauled (new short block, valve job, heads, oil pump, plus colling system) but I don't think they changed the fuel filter. I'll try that.
Thanks

I replaced fuel filter with no luck. Would cleaning out or replacing the stepper moter help? When my original problem accured (cracked block) oil seeped into the exhuast system and was dripping from the converter. Would a clogged exhaust system cuase the same results? I had driven a few hundred miles w/o any issues though.

clean the stepper motor its easy to do and alot of the time thats what it is since it does control idle esp. when coming to a stop

I had the same problem with my 2000. It ended up being the MAF sensor. If you disconnect the MAF and let it run it might fix your problem. This is an easy way to test it.

I replaced the thermostat Micheal, and the erratic idle stopped. The old thermostat wasn't closing/sealing all the way.

Yesterday I heard some wierd noises coming from my fuel pump when I turned the key on (just to the point before it starts). It sounds like it's sucking air and fuel at the same time. Kinda like sucking water through a straw with a hole in the side of it. Now the idle stutters or changes a little bit, like it's not getting a steady supply of fuel. I may have to replace my pump, but I think I'll try a new filter first.

I'm new to the disco, and my 98 is having the same problem with the idle.

John, can you tell me where the stepper motor is located and what it looks like? Also, how difficult is it to clean?

Also, does the o2 sensor have any effect on this? The dealer told me that the sensor may need to be replaced.

Thanks

dave do a searh in the archives for stepper motor there are a plethora of threads on this. but the stepper motor is on the front of the plenum at the throttle body. 2 little (5 mm i think) bolts hold it on with an electrical connector coming off the front of it. Don't confuse it with the TPS, and im not talking about TPS reports this time. haha
