Hi, about 5-7k miles after installing new rotors and brake pads on both axles a cumbersome vibration in the vehicles front occured when braking from higher speeds (i.e. above 45 mph; worse with light braking action). Wheel bearing play was evident and fixed but didnt help. A quick inspection revealed a few black marks on the RH rotor´s surface (running from inner to outer circumference - I think the rotor felt a little rough over these marks but could be imagination). The inner brake pad was perfect while the lateral on showed uneven wear : it was thinner at its front than on its read end while the surface looked smooth and even (just like it has to). The caliper pistons on that side are not stuck. they both more lightly and can easily be pushed in. I have replaced all the pads on front axle and I think the problem is gone (admittedly I havent seen the rangie much since, my wife can´t part with it). ? Has anyone made a similar experience. I am unsure about the reason. I have not heard of "bad" brake pads, nor have there been problems with the rotors I buy. Hard to believe the caliper is faulty (doesnt leak and has had new pistons and seals). ? Might the little springs that are pushed over the large pin which retain the pads be guilty (I manufactured them myself but unseccessfully - all broken). |

Uneven pressure is the typical reason for seeing incerased wear at the leading edge of the pad. Typically this is seen as a line pressure failure or seal failure with the front pistons. Wheel rotor runout can also cause this kind of thing and that may have been the reason for the problem. It may be well to note that the piston at the back has more work to do, so if you are seeing more wear at the leading edge, it may mean the REAR piston on that side is not engaging properly forcing the front to do more work. Hendric, Are those spots on the rotors blueish? it sounds a bit like you have some hard spots on the rotors, A rotor with uneven surface and hard spots will trash your pads realy fast. Wwhen you apply the brake do you have a realy hard pedal? The only way to fix it to replace the rotors. Did you run Napa semi pads or raybestos semi pads? |
