I thought the grill was different but radiator was the same as the Australian (and others) spec. One thing I noticed recently when comparing my 95D1 (3.9) with a mates "new" 95 4.6 range rover that his radiator is very small compared to the dicso's. What gives?

Scott Squared,
I was comparing the same thing. My '99 RR has a small radiator compared to the Disco. Just thought that the Gulf spec (the RR ain't) was the difference there. Maybe someone can list the actual "Gulf States Specifications" for a 1996 Disco? One of the guys that has dealer connections. I couldn't find anything searching the NET.

Yep, we do. And it is GREAT. The WHOLE electrical/cooliong/fans/blablabla is bigger and is fitted as per those fitted to SV in the late 90s
I have my 1998 Gulf Spec Discovery Fxi and it has all the goodies. Currently in Germany, so can´t go out in the heat and check for you :-)

Nadim,
Cool...ha ha!
I wonder what my temp gauge would read without Gulf Specs on a Sunday drive here when it's a sizzling 55°C (that's 131°F for you stateside)? It barely goes above halfway now in the deep sand!

Big Ed,

Where abouts in Saudi were you. I'm in Dhahran...been here for ten years although I've only had my Disco Series II for the last two years.

I'm busy adding all the gadgets to it at this very moment. Dubai 4x4 let me down recently by sending me the incorrect TJM winch plate so I might visit Dubai to drop it on their heads!! Had to wait 9 months to get the wrong item!!

We've visited the Jumerah Beach Hotel a few times but I've never driven there yet!!

Jeremy,
I flew out of Jeddah for 3 years...1991-94. It was good back then. Now, I've heard it's much more restrictive. Medineh Salah was a favorite trip. Sandstone cliff dwellings like Petra in Jordan. Mostly turned into grave sites now. Great trip. Would welcome you to come on over to Dubai. You got my number now! I've not dealt with Dubai 4x4, but will take any message to them you'd like to send! :-)

The crater. We hiked down and stomped "our names" into the salt. Great photo from back on top. Graffiti without the cops chasing you.
The dam was good, wadi Madraka, baboons outside Taif that would pound on your window for food! Still have the GPS co-ords for most of those places.

Hold on Hold on!!!. Talk about hijacking a post. My disco 1 has a radiator that is massive - you could not literally fit a bigger one in. It has 2 electric cooling fans that span the radiator and a viscious clutch fan aswell. In Australia we have desert heat that is similar to the Gulf - eg the Simpson. My point is, is the spec here the same as for the Gulf. I have plugged through very deep sand in high heat towing and the temp guage does not even move from normal. My d2 has the same set up, but with one bloody large electric fan instead of the 2 smaller ones. Cheers

Scott,
AFAIK, the 2 electrics are for the AC, and the heat in the GULF is a CONSTANT 40+ degree celcius and people were complaining to LR that their systems either did not last/cool correctly and/or their AC did nothing to cool THEM down...
SO...in 1998 the "Gulf Spec" was born and was retrofitted to <98 trucks and came standard on 98+ trucks.
Ironically that was the year when most stuff inthe Gulf went from Lucas to Bosch.
Dunno about down under, but that is SURELY a harsh terrain to consider an upgrade!

Scott Squared...
Now you've gone and changed your question haven't you? Nadim answered the Gulf Spec equipment question and you are trying to hyjack this thread back.

Perhaps you have "Gulf Spec" and don't even know it. What do you think Nadim? Could LR be selling GS downunder? Seems a reasonable venture to me considering the harsh climate half the year.

I have NO idea and am not qualified to answer that...
All I can say is that I am HAPPY with my GS 98 in the desert vs my 92 when I went to Jordan Summer 2000 (boiling inside!)

Do you guys run your A/C when you're traveling through sand, salt, and dust?

Just wondering, because I was taught to turn my A/C off in those conditions and it does get uncomfortable. Is it better for the engine to keep it off?

Thanks, Jamie

Yep - I keep it idleing the garage at night with AC on to keep the seats and dash happy. I also belive that if the gas keeps circulating the seals and rubbers will be lubricated and last forever. Whoever buys the car when, say at 200k I sell it will actually have a car with a motor that has probably done the equavalent of 300k

I don't use the AC very often here in the UAE. Seriously, I only use it on days that end in "Y".
