Has anybody heard of this... The amber Check Engine Light came on in my 99D2. I had a local shop check with thier OBDII sensor and got code PO734. According to the Workshop manual that code means "Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio". I called my local LR Dealership and spoke to the manager whom I trust and he said that code meams my Mass Airflow Sensor is bad. What gives...

Oh, I forgot to say "Hi". It's been awhile since I posted, hope all is well on Dweb. Please excuse my absence, but so far the disco is running well, except for this little matter and I've been extremely busy rebuilding my MG.

Do you possibly have a K&N air filter? There has been some previous topics about problems with the K&N oil fouling the MAF.

Thanks Alan, but nope, just good 'ol paper. I've heard of the K&N problem too.

I'm just confused why a LR Service Manager I trust would tell me a OBDII code saying something about a transmission problem would be a Mass Flow Air Sensor... Weird. I questioned him about it that exactly, and told him it was weird. Now, my local shop on the corner used a run of the mill OBDII scanner and not testbook. Maybe that is the issue. I dunno.

I'm just wondering if anyone else ever heard of this before...

I just called AB, (in my backyard) and they have a MAF for $129. I just don't want to spend any $$$ on something I don't need.

Just had the exact thing happen and the mass air flow sensor is the problem. I had the same codes and everything. Replaced the sensor and it went away, but look for a lose of power, but improved gass mileage. This has happened to two other friends as well, it seems to be common from what I understand. Mine is 2000 D2

Thanks Derick! That is very weird! I wanted to see if anyone else had that problem before I forked over the cash!

Thanks again,

Gotta love Dweb!

John, same thing happened to me a while back. Check engine light was on, had the dealer run testbook, 4th gear ratio error, replace the MAF sensor. Replaced it and all is well.

$129 is a good price I might add. :-)

My 99D2 threw this code a million times, before and after a new MAF and I wasn't using K&N at the time. It was throwing P0733 (invalid 3rd gear ratio) too.

I was told this was because of my OME lift and larger tires. Hmmmmmm, methinks. Finally, the AT when TU.

Replaced the AT, have bigger tires, more lift, haven't seen the code since.

That said, chances are, MAF will solve your problem.

Were there other codes related to fuel trim out of range on both banks? MAF failures generating 4th gear codes are common, but I have seen them with mixture adaptation codes as well.

Just as a follow up, I just popped the new MAF in. So far no problems or codes. Very easy swap. Just the wallet is lighter!

I had the same thing happen on my 2000 D2. First the dealer told me I might need a new trans and then a week later it turned out to be the MAS. It was changed out and I have not had a problem since. I talked to the mechanic who worked on it and he told me that he followed the instrcutions directly from the trans manufacturer and that is what he was told to do after making numerous other checks including droping the trans pan and replacing the filter.

Hey, just as a follow up, I just drove to Boston and back, ~400 miles, no problems. I haven't had a chance to check my fuel milage, but it seemed normal.

Just had my MAF sensor replaced in my Audi. $543. And I was using a K&N for a few thousand miles before. Sounds like it may be cheaper to do this repair on a Land Rover, strangely.
