Has anyone put in a rear Detroit Locker in a D2 and not upgraded to heavy duty axels? I have heard the locker would cause the axel to break. Is this the case?

The locker will not cause the axle to break.

If you put your vehicle in a situation with enough leverage, the axle will be the weak point.

Do a search, this is talked about a lot, all with the same answer... upgrade your axels, or drive a trail bomb.

If the axle lets go it's prolly gonna frag the diff, so HD shafts are good insurance.

Derek,

You've got it backwards, if the axle snaps, it'll ruin the Detroit locker along with it. Trust me, this isn't a situation where it's worth "saving" money.

Thanks,

Nathan is right. Do not put a detroit in unless you have HD axles. The stock axles will twist over time, even from driving on the road. If you do leave the stock axles in, paint a straight line along the axle. If you don't break them by the time you get the HD axles you will see a twist in the axle. You will get about three or four twists before the axle snaps, which will be the long axle about 8" from the flange.

As far as the money goes, think about this. Instead of saving $600 on axles you will be spending another $450 on a new detroit plus the $600 on axles. You might be able to get away with rebuilding the detroit for about $50, but then you will have a lot of work ahead of you. Believe me, I did it. It's not worth it. You will break an axle.

Thank you all for the advice. I figured as much, but wanted to be sure.

... nice thing about an ARB, it is strong enough to handle a broken axle without grenading...
