OK, did my homework in the archives, but I see 2 differing opinions and now I'm cornfused as hell. 97 D1, stock alternator, standard Interstate battery (don't know spec) and Warn 8000 winch. I added 4 lights to the rack and 2 to the bullbar (IPF 130W/ea - spec'd @ 65W/ea amp draw). When I turn on ALL lights, my tach drops about 200-300 RPM. Plus I have 2 IPF work lights in the back (55W/ea). 1st question: Is this RPM drop OK or am I going to eventually burn up my alternator and/or reduce battery life? Next question: If I need to upgrade to a higher output alternator, what size do I need and where can I get one...cheap. I know the Optima yellow/red battery setup w/isolator is the way to go if I need the battery upgrade. Thoughts? Recommendations? |

So you have 6x65 watts running = 390 watts, plus your headlights. I have run several all-nighters with 1000+W of rack lights without problems. Although the alternator on the D2 is upgraded, you should be ok with that wattage. |

I've read good things about the Mean Green alternator; though, I have no first-hand experience, but here's a link if you want to take a look: http://www.mean-green.com/products/alternator.html You also said cheap. These are not. I also don't think you need dual batteries with your setup. A single Optima Yellow Top or a Hawker Odyssey will do the trick. I started this thread when contemplating what to do about batteries: ../2/42575.html"MB">
