Question. Does anyone have their cellphone hardwired to their radio? Any brand/weblink suggestions would be appreciated.
I would like an adapter that connects the cellphone earpiece socket to the radio and when the caller speaks, the radio would mute and caller could be heard from the speakers.
Any such animal?
Please, not the wireless kind from Radio Schlock. I got one & returned it.

TIA

Rupert

Never heard of such an animal.

I have heard of a radio having this capability when wired to a hands free kit with the same capability. My Motorola hand free kit for my Motorola T720C has this option. In order for it to work though, my radio would have to have this option as well (mine doesn't). Then, if the phone rang while listening to the radio or CD, it would automatically mute so you can hear the phone ring. I don't know if the stock radio has this capability. Good Luck

The Stock Radio in my 95 D1 has this capability, but everything was hard wired before I bought it.

Rupert,

I had a Sony head unit that had a wire lead that was labeled "Telephone". I never used it but I'm assuming it was for that purpose. I unfortunately don't have that unit anymore, but I'll look around for the manual (that should be somewhere in my garage), maybe I can give you a model number from there. If I recall correctly, that unit does exactly what you mentioned above, mute the sound of the source and let you hear the phone over the speakers.

You can also go to any specialty audio shop and they should be able to hook you up. Good luck!

Rupert-

The stock radio on my '96 Discovery (The usual AM/FM/Cassette - CD changer) has this capability. The old hands free auto setup from my old Qualcomm Thinphone worked with it. It was very nice because as an incoming call came in the hands free set would turn down the volume. It did not play the phone call over the stereo speakers, but did have its own remote speaker, and microphone.

Verizon, of course, said that that ohone was way too old of a technology to continiue operating with their new stuff, and would I please get a new phone.

Unfortunatly the handsfree adapter for my new Kyocera does not have this feature, nor is it hardwired, nor does it even have a descent cradle for the phone. (Just another sign of a decaying culture.)

I know of no generic setup that does this.

I still have the handsfree set and two of the Thinphones laying around somewhere. If interested send me an e-mail.

Thank you dwebbers,

Tony D.-
The disco2.com tech article is what got me going on this thread.
Reed C.-
Thank you, but I think I'll call up AT&T (our present provider) and see if they got a handsfree. BTW, did you know that some sheriff's, CHPs, PDs take old cellphones and give them to low income people in rural areas to use to call 911. You can get a tax writeoff.

Chad M-
It's a 03 Disco with a Harmon Cardon system. The cellphone is a Motorola.

Glen G.-
Looks like I'll have to go down to the SF bayarea
to find those specialty shops.

Thanks again to all.
I'm still searching & researching.

Rupert,
You can get an installed hands free kit for it for about $200. This will give you an external antenna, speaker, mic, and charging cradle. The control box will have a stereo mute wire that you can run a relay through your factory radio. Let me know the model number and I can quote you a price.

Oh yeah...Reed,
Which Kyocera do you have? I can check availabliity of hands free kits for it as well. Most Verizon phones have a hard wire kit available. As do AT&T and Cingular.

As for radio mute...most after market stereo's have a mute wire for accessories. If not you can hook up your kit to turn the stereo off when the phone rings.

I have the Motorola handsfree unit for the V60 phone installed on my DII.. it is awesome. Answers after two rings and hangs up automatically. I bought the kit off ebay for $150 and my friend installed it in under an hour, easy hook up once you get the radio out.

Rupert-

I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains (and County), so most of the homeless in this county have full service on their cell phones.

Actually your suggestion is a very good idea, and I will check into it. But when I read your reply, I had this vision of someone walking down highway 9 with a total hands free cell phone setup on their backpack.

Chad-

My Kyocera is a 7135. I especially like it because with the Palm OS, and with the Auterra software and cable, I can check the OBDII codes when they come on, and even monitor the engine sensors while the engine is running. (But NEVER while I'm driving...)

I would love to find a true harwire kit for it. Hopefully one with a descent cradle (the generic cradles I have seen just don't work well). I would at least, like something better than that monstosity that plugs into the cigar lighter that Kyocera sells. I can live without the radio volume control.

Chad,
Do they offer a decent kit for the Sony Ericson T616? This would be going into my D2.

Thanks!

Justin,
The kit for your T616 cost me $135. It is a hardwire kit with cradle, mic, speaker, and antenna connection. It does have a radio mute feature. Antennas are sold seperately.

Reed,
There is not much available for the Kyocera. All I could find is a headset and keyboard. Sorry.

Justin,
Wrong price above...
The kit is 87.00
The cable is 11.00
The hang up cup is 19.00

Chad-

Thanks for checking. That is the same conclusion I came to after I got the phone.

When I get a chance to get a second hands free unit, I have some seriously strange plans for one of them.

Rupert,

Glad to see your post about donating cell phones. You can save lives. I'd encourage everyone to donate their old phones. If your local agencies won't accept them, send them to:

CALL to PROTECT: Wireless Phones for Domestic Safety and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. They provide donated wireless phones and airttime to potential victims of domestic violence. When your cellular phone (and any accessories) are received, they will send you a receipt which includes their TAX ID# for the deduction on your taxes.
