I am attempting to change out my coupling/viscous fan clutch on my 1998 DISCO.. I HAVE HAD no luck thus far. Tried to torque the bolts off and to no avail the clutch is still in tact? I need some Tech help on this one.. The manual is useless.. I never read the instructions anyway.. I have seen it done once on a RR county but now as I attempt to do this on my own rover I am having no luck.. Anything at all would be oh so helpful @ this point.. |

If you mean the fan clutch. It takes either a special tool. Or put a wrench on it and hit the wrench to break it free. I think it has right hand threads on it. Will take several hits, but will come off rather easily. |

"""I think it has right hand threads on it""" YES IT DOES have the right hand threads on it ..I already tried putting a wrench to it .. I am afraid that I will hit it too hard and dis-configure the timing/fan belt. I think you are correct though, it takes a special tool I do not have. Thanks anyway! |

I just did mine. I have a 96. You have to take the serpentine belt off first. Then use a belt wrench on the water pump pulley to hold the pulley still while you crank off the fan bolt. My bolt worked like any other bolt (clockwise to tighten). Bolt came off quite easily. |

I wasn't sure of the direction my RRC goes the opposite way of my 97 D1. |

yep, lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. i picked one of these right off the shelf of my local auto parts place. for a ford, but worked perfect on my 95 Discovery: http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS &MfrCode=APO&MfrPartNumber=T75508&CategoryCode=3412 one wrench, with a half inch breaker for the coupler nut and one wrench head with a half inch breaker to hold the pulley. off in a few seconds. |

Well taking fan with coupling is one thing. But getting fan off the coupling is royal pain. Be sure to have right allen wrenches if you plan to do that , I ended up making my own, b/c i didnt have right size And Robbie right - its pretty easy. You just need small crowbar (or strong screwdriver.. but crobar better as it longer) to block pulley, and adjustable wrench or socket one... Again - if you feel like it wont go in place where you want it to - grab piece of metal tubing that you can put on the end of wrench, and it will increase your torque
