Hey, I'm getting a GPS for the G... Probably a Garmin. Which type of GPS's do you all have? What do you like/dislike about them? I'm just trying to get an idea about other GPS's out there!

Thanks

what ever you get,,,,get one with a big screen!
i have a garwin III+ its a nice unit but hard to read at a glance while you are motoring! also get one that is WAAS equipped so you can use while you are flying.

I've had the GPS295 for almost a year now and I love it. It's more of an aviation GPS, but you can get the atlas software and it has a pretty extensive "Land" mode. Not sure if Garmin has a "vehicle" version of this thing, but I've been very pleased with the unit. SOftware updates are easy and WAAS works great even with the little cheesey portable antenna.

Garmin 176 i have to say. large screen and just about all the goodies you would ever need. like MK said......go big. makes all the difference in the world when you are driving. no need to stop and "take a closer look." also having the ability to add just about all the memory you will need. can load up to 128 mb ram. i only have 32 and that has been enough from me for now. has WAAS of course. even is preloaded with blue charts for boating.

I liked Garrett's 176. If you're talking vehicle-only, it'd be about as good as it gets. I'll be getting something smaller, only because I'll also backpack with it, too... I'm getting a Garmin GPSMAP76S. Similar, but smaller.

FWIW....

if you are talking about auto routing then no. like the garmin V right? i had that one for about 3 weeks and sent it on its way to get the 176. auto routing is for losers!! if you can't read the display and find your way then you should not be in the truck to begin with. haha.
check here for all the goodies. 176 has better resolution, can store tons more waypoints, able to add lots of memory. and if you wanted to carry it with you you could. just not as compact as most. i mean mine will be staying on my dash 90% of the time. http://www.selectzone.com/cgi-bin/shopper.exe?preadd=action&key=GPUS0100020800

lol.... :)

Seriously, what you can do is plan a route on your computer, then load it into your GPS, if you want....

FWIW...

Yep, that's the one.... easier to hike with, but still good in a vehicle.

I like.... :)

i have the GPS III+ and was going to do the laptop thing, but i drive one of three cars and it would be nice to be able to have all the routing features and detailed street info w/out a laptop.

anyway, one thing i noticed about the III+ is that it only really has decent detail when you download a route to it. otherwise, it is pretty much useless as it only shows about 10% of the streets I drive on.

can you download more info with the 176 for use all the time without a route downloaded? I'd like to download an entire metro area with full detail. maybe i can't do that with any of them, but i was assuming that would be a by product of auto-routing. maybe i wouldn't feel the need for auto-routing if i had a decent map to look at on the GPS.

i have the full set of MapSource Topo maps and they work great. VERY good detail with even hiking/biking/atv/logging trails on it. i typically download a specific group of maps to my unit depending on where i am going. i have 32 mb of ram in my 176 (can go up to 128). that is usually plenty for me. i can download most of PA if i wanted to. but i will typically download what i need to map out my entire route. this way i can route it on my PC and then download that route to the unit. just follow the route and you are good to go. no need to have a laptop along side you. i also have Delorme Topo 3.0. this allows me to get a little more crazy with stuff......show full elevations and nice 3D maps, etc.
i will eventually get a city select CD too. but then again i have not really had a need for it. the topo has been great and with enough memory you can really load up the GPS unit with more than enough detail for a specific region or area you will be or are going to.
