Does anyone know how to remove the center section of the dash on a D1? The cable for the vent controls jammed and I'm trying to get at it. I removed the clock, cup holder, ash/change trays, and can get 2/3 of the black surround to move but it seems like it's hung up on the radio. (which I can't figure out how to remove) Anybody do this before? Thanks! |

right below the radio there is a cover you need to remove to expose 2 screws i think maybe 3. Pull the temp control knobs and the fan switch off and there will be two small screws that hold on the vent control assembly. Once you remove that there are a few more screws behind there holding the main trim piece on. That should do it. |

Thanks for the info. I now have the vent controls loose, but can't figure out how to remove the trim below the radio to free it. I assume there are clips somewhere, but I can only flex it in the center. Any ideas? |

Use a very thin but wide screwdriver with cloth wrapped around it, this will prevent you from scratching the plastic. The trim below the radio is held by two plastic tabs, they are really easy to break and more than likely you will break one to get the unit out, just don't break both of them!!! I was able to remove mine by prying the unit out slowly, I did break one tab but it still fit into place when I put everything back. Remove everything that Neal mentioned and you should be able to get to the entire unit. Also just so you know if your trying to get to the cable that controls the hot and cold it can be done by just removing the trim underneath the dash (the black trim). With all that trim pulled out from either side depending on which one you think went bad, you should be able to connect, disconnect or repair the controllers to the hot and cold knobs which are operated by a wire cable!!! Just so you know in case you don't want to take to many things appart. |

Tony, I am not understanding what the balck trim is. When I removed the radio I could see the wire and I put back on the knob. However I had issues turning it full circle. I did notice there is a red clip. I can not locate where this mates up. If there is an easier way to get in there I am all for it. My hands are to big to get in the opening and I have not attempted to remove all the center trim. Regards |

The black trim underneath the car is the black cardboard stuff that is held by two to three round black tabs. Both the driver and the passenger have them. On the driver side removing this is easy and it allows you to see the cable directly, this is all under the steering wheel and above the foot pedals. On the passenger side you might have to remove the storage bin, that comes out by removing the screws on the hinges and pulling on the tabs on each side of the storage bin that keep the unit in place. Once you get in there it should be easy to figure out. Once you take the trim out and the storge bin if that is the side you need to look at it should give you a good view of the cable that controls the knobs!!!! |
