How would it affect the sound of my stock exhaust ('97 Disco)? Should I do it just for shits and giggles, or is there some negative effect?

Alright!!!!!

Do I need to put the turn down back onto the tail pipe? Is there some requirement for inspection to have that, or is it OK to have your exhaust come out under the cab like that?

In the great state of FL there is NO inspection so you are on your own. I would imagine in trafic it might get a little rightous inside dumping out under the truck.

yes you will notice a slight noise difference, especially at start up. that seems to be when mine is the loudest.
it's not Borla loud, but it is louder.
and yes, add a section of pipe to the end to put those nox fumes away from your vehicle.
most muffler shops do this for about $20. mine cost $19+tax.

Where would you route the tailpipe to keep it from getting damaged on the trail? My resonator takes a beating. I want to remove it. I don't think I want to do a Grag Davis, although it looks cool.

Has anyone thought about running the tailpipe out through the rear bumper?

Actually I was thinking about doing a Greg Davis. See how many dremel disks I can break this time. I broke about 10 cutting my fenders for big tires. Looks good though, and you don't have to repaint cause aluminum doesn't rust!!

greg,
i had mine tipped down just before the rear body mount on the drivers side ( i have a RTE rear bumper, though) and that seems to be enough to push the exhaust back as well as clears when bragging the rear bumper.

I cut mine off and just left it alone. I don't ever smell exhaust and haven't seen any reason to extend it either. AND I like not having a tip or anything else coming out the back to get smashed or torn off. .02
