Any ideas? The fan wobles a bit and I can move it freely by hand (engine off of course). On Jennifers 98 LE

I did a search on "loose fan" and water pump pre-failure seemed to be the diagnosis. There is a noticible noise in one of the pullies, so I pulled the serpentine belt off and checked each pully. They all seemed fine.

I am not going to rule out that the water pump needs replaced, but the shaft that the fan is on does not wobble (just the fan on the shaft) and there is no sign of antifreeze loss and the engine temp is fine.

I guess what I am looking for is:

Can the fan just come loose? And how do you tighten it if so?

Is it safe to drive for a bit?

Thanks
Brendan

I have 2 97 discos. They are both fine, one has a new waterpump, both fans wobble.

The fans work with a viscuous clutch. When the temps get hot, they engage.

I don't think its a problem, just a characteristic of the fan design.

I just changed the fan clutch ... in my 1998 Disco ..Can you stop the fan with your hand? ( Be careful) If so I think it might be time for a new fan clutch.. I have been told that they wear after about 60K My disco has 62K .. Mine was about 186.00... Pretty easy install..After excellent instructions from the Discoweb Team!

Thanks Jamie and Mellisa for the replies. My 97 doesn't wobble regardless of temp. I will monitor the 98 to see if it progresses.
Thanks again,
Brendan

Howboucha everyone. Just wanted to bump this for more input. The fan is still wobbling regardless of temp or how long the engine has been running. My XD is tight as a..... well you get the idea, it's tight, the LE is loose.

B: I have a 1998 LSE DISCO 62K miles .. If I had to put $$ on it ...It is the fan clutch..the unit attaches to the H2O pump...it is activate by heat..and it wears out fairly regularly. Mine was wobling .. When I took it to the Dealership ..the rover tech said that it was wobling due to the clutch fan going out... Just FYI...

The fan attaches to the fan clutch via four or five hex bolts!!! If your is wobbling either the fan clutch or the fan unit itself might be loose or mis-align. Pull it off as it is pretty easy to do and inspect. If your not experiencing engine overheat issues than is more likely just the fan and not the clutch!!!! When I replaced my fan clutch I rented the fan clutch removal tool from O'Riley's and it made the job really easy

"Can you stop the fan with your hand? ( Be careful) "

Please, for everyone's sake, do not try and stop your fan with your hand.

And FWIW, I agree with Tony's post above..

weebles wobble...fans shouldent

fix it now or pay the price...when the fan blows up it will ruin the hood crack the fan shroud and do in the radiator all in one loud second, and trying to limp a aluminum V8 out of traffic with no coolent may warp a head and cost you a rebuild.

dont be stupid and wait and see what happens, it will happen. when you discover a problem fix it . That is what preventative maintenance is all about.

I have been trying to remove the fan clutch today, and I am at the point where a sledgehammer may be the proper tool.

I went to Autozone and picked up the tool set, unfortunately it was the wrong one (smallest tool was 40mm).

I have tried using a strap wrench over the waterpump pulley and a vice grip on the nut. I cannot get it to budge.

Is there anyone in dweb land that knows how to remove it without the tools. I have searched the archives and am only finding bits and pieces.

I probably am not thinking to clearly either because I am beyond frustrated.

Anyone, anyone?

B.K.

B: I know that I am a girl( and that Peter just ran my A** thru the mud in the above post--YES BASH ROVERCHIC!!!) but I changed mine out last weekend .. There is a post with some info on it in Discoweb from me .It is reverse threaded. I used a larger screwdriver to wedge in the pulley with the belt. I basically used it as a "brake" to hold it while I turned the nut... It is metric..Turn CCW.

yes melissa is correct it is left hand thread, the secret to getting them off is slight impacts on the wrench to get it loose.

if you tap on the wrench you barely need to hold the pulley if at all because the sharpness of the impact will brake it loose then it will twist right off.

I was doing the CCW things, while using a strap wrench on the pully. I sprayed penetrating oil on it yesterday, so we will see if it makes a difference.

I am going to go ahead and order a new fan clutch. My original thinking was just to pull it off to see what is wrong, but there is no sense in doing it twice.

thanks guys,
Brendan
