I am still misfiring pretty badly. New plugs (tried Bosch, NGK, Autolite, Champion), wires (2 different sets of magnecores), and some injectors. I found a post in the archives that suggested it may be the ignition coils.
Is there an easy way to check them to see if they are bad? How hard are they to replace? (97 Disco-No distributor)

I am hoping it is not the dreaded exhaust valves! Although, at 140K miles I might just have to do it for good measure.

This info is for an RR but it is basically the same engine.

You can get a used coil pack for a fraction of a new one:

Good luck and I hope its not your valves.

What year did they get rid of the distributor?
Will a 96 coil work in a 97?

Greg - what are your symptoms of misfiring? Sometimes at startup my truck shakes and misfires like crazy. Take about 20 seconds, does not stall, but eventually fixes itself. Idles very low at this time too. Also does this when coming to a stop when it is very warm outside. What do you think?

joe,

sounds like your stepper motor could use a little cleaning or maybe replacing.

greg, the guys at british recycling have used coil packs for a 96 for $200.

I found some coil packs from the link that Alan sent me for under $100. I just need to know what years will work.
This is my last attempt to fix it before doing a valve job.

Joe- It misfires all the time. I can hear it and feel it the whole time it is running. It is kind of a "Chunk-a-chunk-a-chunk" sound.
It has been happening off and on for 3-4 years, but lately it has been all the time, and much more noticable while the engine is inder a load, or above 2000rpms.
I put Magnecores in it a few years ago and it fixed everything for about 6 months. It ran better than it ever had, and the check engine light went out. This was without changing the plugs. I was impressed at all the power it had.

Then it started up again with the misfires. I put a new set of magnecores in it, but it didn't fix it. Tried many different brands of plugs, but none work.

Someone suggested ignition coils, so I am giving it a try.

I've got some magnecores in it as well. My stepper motor is working fine...fuel pressure is fine too. I think this is maybe the problem with mine. Greg can you let us know if changing out the coil pack fixes your misfires? I'll have to get mine changed out too.

Thanks - Joe

i to have experienced this stuteering and shaking and erratic idle at start up everyonce in a while. and like Joe mine rights itself after a bit. i was thinking it was a bad fuel filter i bought a replacement filter but have yet to change it. I have found i minimize the occurences by turning the ingnition to the accessory on position so that the fuel pump kicks on and brings the fuel pressure up. But maybe its just been coincidental that my letting the fuel pump run has reduced my hard starts.

Joe do you get the CEL on these misfiring startups? i dont get a CEL with mine. What codes are you guys getting?

P0300 and P1316 are the ones i keep getting. i dont get the codes at startup it usually happens within 5 minutes after start up. i dont even feel a change in the engine and dont even feel or hear the misfire. Is this the same as you guys are experiencing?

p.s. i have a set of magnecores to. i bought them to try and remedy the misfires. i think the landrovers tendency to misfire has surely rasied magnecore stock.
