Hey Tim, had the same problem. I used a small srew driver to pry the plastic piece off. inside there is a metal clip holding in a half circle retainer, for now just put the clip back on.

With mine the clip was warn, adn kept popping off until i went and got a new one from the dealership, but until then, i kept that screw driver in the rover at all times.

Good Luck,

Ryan

Wait a second - how about the brake switch lever? I would check that out before taking anything apart!! This is a very common problem. Are you hearing the mechanical sound when you step on the brake releasing the shifter?

Yes, check the brake light switch under the dash. It is connected to the brake pedal. You can simply jump the 2 wires on the connector and you will be oka. You can either replace the switch or bypass it...

tim had the same trouble awhile back.

The switch located on the brake pedal. black plastic disconnect take it out and give it a good seeing to (cleaning wise) maybe a computer cleaner to leave no liquid residue or WD40 b4 pulling the centre console apart.

It happened twice to me and it was the same thing twice.

good luck.

read in consumer reports that the rear defroster can short by touching the rear high brakelight which results in the car being stuck in park. i don't know the mechanism (or how it is fixed) but a dealer should be familiar with this problem.
