So, am I waisting my time and money with these Rovers? Should I just go out and get a Kia or something? It seems to do just as good if you are looking at the photos on the:

05/25/02: pics from The Farm - WI

As linked to from the front page of Discoweb.org

Somebody who was there tell me that Kia had more trouble than the Rovers, or I shall be very put-out.

Thats funny. One day last fall I was on an ATV trip and saw a Kia take and make a climb that I am not sure I would ever attempt. It was bone stock. I am sure this has more to do with balls than vehicle capability, but still...

Mr. Bailey,

Yes, by all means, get a Kia.

So, if I sell my Disco and my Series IIa, I could probably afford a Kia, or two. And I could just beat them up!

But did you see that picture? It looked like the Disco II was stuck where the Kia was in the process of becoming un-stuck!

Do they have V-8's?

Yes, I bought it before the Disco. It would have been my main mode of transport, but it turns out that I drive 30 miles a day - in the rain, before sunrise - in the winter. And a new born baby does not go well in a Series Rover! I've got pics on my web site:

Ya, the Kia just doesn't quite cut it when it comes to off-road fun. No soft top, you can't winch it into a tree, you can't hose it out without damage, you can't take the top off for summer fun. I bet they don't even use them in the military anywhere! :)

I got a Series Rover (a beater, tho') about the same time the wife's parents forced their Ford Aspire on her (which was made for Ford by Kia). I hated that car. I had to give up the nice Disco to help her get rid of the Aspire, and we both now have Subarus for commuters, but on the condition that I get a new frame for the Series, and another Disco in a year or so.... :)

Sounds spiteful, but it was worth it to get rid of that Kia-made car...

I've got a friend who bought one of the Sportages... he said that it could go anywhere over his farm, through creeks and across wallows, etc., but that the build quality sucked... and the dealership was worse than a Rover dealership (no offense meant to the good ones out there, Alyssa)...

IMHO....

Well, it might go "anywhere", but you just can't love a Kia like you love a Rover. Everytime I drive my Rovers, (or the '97 SAAB 900SE Turbo) I say to myself, "I love driving this car!"

Just does not work that way with many things.

I was there, and the Kia owner had removed the front bumper. He could not get through the first real mudhole and could not keep up with the rovers. I will say that he had a lot of fun...and has Rover envy.
There are more picts at my site.

I know someone who bought a Kia Sportage (1998 model, same year as my disco). I don't know anything about off-road capability, but I can attest to its terrible on-road handling. The thing lurched and galumphed all over the place, was worse than the Suzuki Sidekick that I used to own.

As far as dealerships go, the Kia dealership (one in Chicagoland) was very helpful. They were more than willing to take the car and try and fix the problems (mainly things that were lined up properly)... they were not always successful but they did always clean his car for free.

Oh.. and the worst thing of all. The way the rear tire holder had to be moved to open the back gate.
