Okay guys, I'm lookin to get some creative ideas here. I'm building a winch friendly bumper for the disco.

I also have a 32 foot flat bed trailer, my winch is currently on a quick disconnect system at the front of the trailer faceing backwards, to allow me to pull cars up on.

I would like to design my bumper so that the the winch is still quick disconnect, then also have a auick disconnect wire harness in for it on the back receiver as well. I have a few ideas, but it's always good to get those of others as well. My main concearn is strength and weight, and still having it look good.

I was planning on using a piece of 3.5 x 3.5 1/4" angle steel to mount across the frame rails, and then I would have something I could build the rest of the bumper off of, as well as a solid piece to mount the reciever hitch onto. I am still trying to figure out if I would need to have the winch latch on to the bumper on both sides at the front as well, I think I will come up with something, but still just in the planning stage. I am no engineer though, and wanted to see what others thought of this idea, or Kyle, if your bumpers allready come with a quick disconnect winch option... sign me up!

I will leave a clean look behind the winch so when not connected, it looks nice too, and was even considering building a spacer to fill the gap adn help keep it clean when th ewinch isn't mounted, but I don't plan it being off the rover very much anyways.

Thanks again for all your input guys, and if this idea is just crazy from the start, let me know.

Thanks,

Ryan

buy another winch, and build a bumper and mount it solid. there is nothing that looks more rediclious than a fifty thousand dollar car and some terrible winch and bumper combo. do it proper. and if your not going to remove it that much any way then what is the point to begin with. also it makes it that much easier for some bloke to steal it off the front of the truck!

Totally understand guys, I am hoping to make it very clean and professional looking. Currently I have a warn T 4500, which I know is way to small, but my friend has a Warn XD8000, which I'm going to be trading him for when he sells his 4-runner.

I had a quick disconnect winch on my jeep, homemade, but jeep bumpers are a little different and no where near as good looking, so I don't want to use the same system. It did have a lock on it that was impossible to cut. (used the same design as federal requirements for an explosives magazine) and I could build that again, just a pain to get into.

If I could afford to buy a seperate winch, that would definately be the way to go, I'm just trying to be creative with my funds here. I like the multimount set up, just wish they have the prices listed.

I'll run down to my cousins off road shop and check it out. I probably will just end up goin with a solid winch bumper anyways... just trying to make the most of all my equipment, and right now having the winch on my trailer is more crucial than on the rover.

Thanks for the input guys!

Ryan

ryan,
this concept has been done many times in the past. and even though you will take some lumps for its asthetics, they work just fine.
make sure you have a solid mount on both frame rails and you'll be fine. i built a bumper a few years back for a friends RRC, that used this type of mount. his reasoning for it was that he wanted to be able to remove the winch for weight issued and longevity of the winch. in any case, it looks goofy but works just fine.
