Hello from Alaska.

I just got an oil change the other day. I knew I had a typical Rover oil leak, but the techs told me it was both the oil pan gasket and the real main seal. I think I can deal with the oil pan gasket, but the rear main has me freaked. Does anybody know where I can get some information on fixing this? Is it something I can do myself? How much should I pay to have somebody do it for me?

All of you should come up here and go wheeling with me. It's cold now, but come this summer it will be great.

Take care.

If you are a do it yourselfer, get the workshop manual, it works like a very in depth Chiltons or haynes. I think you could do it yourself, maybe with a friend. Do you have to drop the to relace?

yes you have to drop the transmission. get the complete seal 'kit.' the rear main seal and two other X shaped seals. not an easy job for one person. you will need some help lowering the transmission and putting it back up in. unless you have stands, etc.
before you do it i would suggest another opinion. how many miles on the D2? start with replacing the oil pan gasket. if it still leaks see where it is coming from.
when you say "techs" who are you referring to? not like jiffy lube techs!! haha

I won't say that these things don't leak, but....if sloppy oil changers spill oil filling the engine (or they try to fill without using a funnel), it runs down inside edge of the head and the v of the engine, down the back, and looks just like a rear main leak at quick glance.

How bad is the leak? I had my RMS fixed twice. It still leaked. If you're pouring oil, then fix it. If it's a drip every other week, then I'd consider it part of the anti-rust system. I'd start by cleaning it thoroughly and monitor. Keep an eye on your oil level as well.

I agree with Jack on this one. I made the mistake of fixing my nissan pathfinder's RMS a few years back. It wasn't leaking bad but i figured i would keep the truck forever. About one year later i got my discovery and now i have a new leak. (2000 DII - 54K) Not sure where its coming from but I will not fix it unless it gets major. Think of it as self - changing oil.

My wife's Benz has had a leaking head gasket for the last 50K and I have not bothered with it. No problems thus far. Just keep an eye on your oil level.

Here's another opinion . . .

I have a '97 D1 that leaked oil at the rear of the engine forever. I figured it was the rear main seal, so I accepted it and forgot about it for a long time. Lately I have been doing a great deal of work on my Disco, so I decided to drop the oil pan, clean it out (along with the oil pump pickup), and reseal. Much to my surprise the thing stopped leaking. I mean, not a drop. Turns out it was the oil pan gasket all along. I even committed Rover blasphemy by sweeping up the Oil-Dri pile on the garage floor.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually take the disco to an import shop and have them change the oil. They've done a decent job in the past. Maybe it's time for a new group. I think I'll just keep checking the oil. It's a very slow leak. I'm using Mobil 1 dinosaur 5W30 for the winter months, so I'll just go buy a few quarts. Take care.
