I went up into the mountains tonight and was playing around with my disco 1. The key got stuck when I got home. Finally I unplugged the battery and it came off. I searched old archives and found out that I might have to replace a sensor from radio shack in the gear shifter. But my instinct says that the dif lock is still slightly locked from my drive earlier causing the problem. If this is the case, how do I get it the dif lock completely off? What sensor from radio shack do I need for the gear shifter? Thanks. |

If you haven't had a Discovery or some other Europeon car before - you may not know that you often have to turn the steering wheel back and forth to get your key out. From what I've been told - that's just how it works. |

it wasn't in park, and yes i turned the steering wheel like crazy. I think it has to do with my dif lock, or the sensor in the gear shifter. |

The key can't come out unless its in park. Its normal on most auto transmission cars. |

Mine did the same thing... MAKE SURE you have the Gear shift all the way in park.. I had a baseball hat around the gear shifter; this stopped it from going all the way to park.. henceforth this prevented the key from coming out .... GOOD LUCK!! |

I just realized that what I meant was that it WAS in park! That is why it is so weird. Sorry about the confusion. I am still having a problem, and might rip open the gear shifter to see what the problem is. Any suggestions before I do so? |

Sam - even though it may have been in "park" the key may not come out unless the thumb button on the gear selector has "clicked" out. If that doesn't happen, the vehicle may think it's still in gear and not release the key. This has happened to be before. |

alan, i have rammed the gear shifter in park over and over again? Any reason it might get stuck? It seems like it is in park, because in the position, it won't go into reverse unless I push in the button. I am not sure if it has "clicked." maybe there is some dirt in it or something.... dunno |

I have the same problem on my 98 D1. I bought my truck from a non-LR dealer, and he didn't have a clue what the problem was. It would randomly get stuck at one stop, then at the next stop it would magically come out. So far, I haven't figured out what the problem is, I just started carrying my second key and my remote starter so I could still lock my door even with the key caught. Oh, and my key gets caught even if the diff lock hasn't been engaged for a week or more. Then it magically comes loose -- I think the disco gods are toying with us.... "hehe watch this shit" I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this post. |

The key shouldn't care about diff-lock, but it might care about the transfer case position. Make sure your transfer case shifter is firmly seated in the "H" position. |

Sam I think you are wheeling down the path toward having to replace a well worn ignition switch lock. |

Only time I got my key stuck was when I put the transfer box in neutral so we could push my 95 out of the way in a parking lot. Had a devil of a time getting the thing back into either high or low range with it sitting still and the engine dead (I usually shift at very low rolling speed). After 10 panicky minutes I finally got the dang thing back into gear and got the key out. |

My key got stuck when the ignition cylinder failed. But then it wouldn't turn either. Now I have a key for the ignition and a key for the doors (as I wasn't about to bend over and let the dealer stick door locks in there too)! Any ideas on an inexpensive way to get back to one key? SandMan |

Sam, Pushing/ramming the gear selector all the way forward doesn't necessarily mean that it's in park. In my truck, the thumb release on the gear selector doesn't "click" out when pushed all the way forward. It actually has to sit in the park position that it likes before the thumb release pops out. I usually put my truck in "park" and wiggle it a bit just to make sure the thumb release pops out. You can hear it pop out. Like Thom said, lubricate it a bit and see if that helps. This problem happened to me a couple times before I realized that it was the thumb release that was holding the key in so I now always make sure that the gear selector is firmly in "park" and the thumb release has popped all the way out. Haven't had this problem since. I'm not saying this is your exact problem but if you can ensure that you are doing this then it eliminates that as a possible source. |
