When starting my 2003 Discovery (5500 mi) there is a sort of "grinding/thunking" noise from just to the front left of the steering wheel. It's momentary, almost like something turning on. Never occurs any other time and the truck runs great. I haven't had much chance to drive it; since we had it my wife has taken it over and she would never even notice. Is this a normal noise? If so, what is it? (just curious) If not normal, what do the disco doctors diagnose? |

Could it be the ABS self-test? It clunks the brake pedal and makes some noise. Can you feel the pedal moving slightly? |

Hmmm.. don't know if I had my foot on the brake when starting. sounds plausible to me, though. i'll check that tomorrow. thanks. |

Its basically pushing your foot off the brake as in an ABS situation (as a self check). |

I bet it is the ABS, put your foot on the brake while starting and there should be a quick movement of the pedal that corresponds to the thunking. It's normal. |

Y'all were exactly right. Thanks for the responses. I generally don't have my foot on the pedal when starting (habit from driving a '67 that needs a little gas to start) but I checked and that was it. |
