I recently bought a 95 discovery with 109 k on it. In the first thousand miles the oil pressure light has came on twice. The first time it came on I put it in the shop and he said the filter screen was clogged up due to excess sludge. He basically told me he was fixing the problem just patching it up. Then 250 miles later the light came on again and it started knocking. How is it possible for the filter screen to get clogged up again that fast or do I have a more serious problem on my hands. I cant afford a new engine right now so I am open to any suggestions. Thanks |

Are you still driving it even though the light is on?

Jansen - well if it was seriously clogged and they just cleaned screen and havent run any detergent solution - sludge will come over from other places (ever looked what your crankcase's insides looks like? ) Also - what oil you got there? Organic? Synth? Mix? What level looks like? Can be something as simple as crappy or under/over-filled oil, you know. |

this sounds like an abused engine to me.... Pull the oil cap...is it totally black in there? Tar like?

My oil light came on every now and then for a while. Then one day while on I10 in Houston at 80mph it came on for the last time!! I blew the engine up. I never got around to tearing apart my old oil pump to see what it looked like, but I suspect it was worn out of tolerance or full of sludge or something. Long before that happened I cleaned the pickup tube, and it changed nothing. I hate to give advice, but it may be worth your time to change the oil pump (in the front cover). I don't think you can clean or rebuild it very well. I couldn't even get the damn screws out of the thing. P.S. with the sheet metal inside the valve covers tar and gunk will not likely reach your oil fill cap. My heads had crap all over and nothing on the cap. |
