Well, I went offroading out in the Dusty land known as East Texas in my 2000 D2 about 3000 miles ago. The service engine soon light came on, but once I got out of the dusty enviroment and back into Dallas it went out. I just hit 55,000 and it is solid again. Any ideas or is this just normal when comming up to the 60K tune-up? Other than running a bit rough every now and then (but it always smoothes out), haven't noticed any issues other than the annoying light.

not 100% but i was told it would kick on around 52K as an emission reminder. No idea - dealer told me $300 - for what?

Any way to reset this or do the work ourselves?

DII - 2000 - 53K - no light yet

David,

I believe that only applies to D1's... DII's I think you must reset through testbook.

The SES light can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a few seconds.

Dean,

Does that just reset the light or the light and the service reminder? I've tried to reset mine (just had the 60K done) as well as the dealer (at least that is what I was told) and it is still lighting up.

Dropping it off tomorrow at the dealer again to have them check it out.

nope...check engine is the same as service engine soon light. Just was at the shop and the computer said I have a bad airflow meter.

must be the life of a MAF sensor...my DII had its replaced recently w/ 56.5K on the clock

As far as I know there is no service reminder for D2s, but I could be wrong. Anyway, what I was saying is that if you do something, such as clean the MAF sensor, and want to reset the light, you can just undo the battery. If its a problem that persists, then it will just come back on after a while. If its cleared up, then it will stay off.

Well just got the call from LR... Bad MAF with just over 60k on the clock.

Does LR consider this a consumable part!?!

Can it be cleaned or does it really need replacing? Cleared the error so I can at least get it inspected.

Justing - clean the filament as best you can with sme kind of residue-free and oil-free cleaner (electrical contact cleaner say). The disconnect the battery and it should turn off the light.

Just before you get inspected, if the light is on disconnect battery for a sec and then it should stay off for a while (about 50-200 miles), unless there is a serious fault.

That Service Engine light went off on my D2 a while back and the dealer said it was a cracked block. WTF?

Same thing just happened to my friend/coworker this week. He has a 2000 D2. The saving grace is that he did spring for the extended warranty. Appears he will be getting a new engine.

Well mine wasn't under warranty -- it cost $$$$$ to get fixed. The light came on, and I read in the owners manual that you're supposed to take it to the dealer immediately. Funny, the motor seemed to be running fine, but the Service Manager said that the #5 cylinder was about to collapse, so they better do something quick.

This appears to be a rather common problem... There are a few other discoweb members who have had their engines replaced for #5 issues.

Hopefully you can use some of that info to negotiate a better price when it comes to labor/parts. Maybe doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to try. Good luck!

Mine has been in the shop for the last 4 weeks...slipped sleeve on #5...I am getting a new block, and valve job. Anyone know anything about the redesign to the new blocks...I hope this new motor lasts a long time!

Well, I will go ahead and take mine in with all this talk about cylinder #5 on DII's. I bought my rover used, but bought the extended warranty through Carmax, it DOES cover a new engine if that is what it is (I hope to God it isn't, but if it is, at least I get a new motor). Anyway, I'll let you guys know what I find out on mine. thanks for the reply's.

We just replaced the short block on our 2000 D2. It had 67K miles - and a slipped sleeve in #5. Although we did the work ourselves, it is still expensive. We got a brand new short block from the local Land Rover dealer for $1000.50 (jobber price.) Along with about $300 for gaskets and a $100 for grinding the heads, we got out for about $1500 overall. It is a lot of money just to fix a factory defect. It took some close inspection to find the slipped sleeve since it was only down about .005". But, that is enough to blow compression into the water jacket between the sleeve and the aluminum block. I've thought about taking the old block and throwing it through the window (like on the Discount Tire commercial). Anyone know the going price for scrap aluminum? Maybe I can get a few bucks for it. If anyone suspects you have the same problem, buy a $25 compression gauge and test all cylinders with the spark plugs removed. The bad cylinder showed 115-120 while the others were above 140 psi. Hope this helps.

Try ALCOA. They bought my crashed airplane at 6 cents a pound and turned it into Coke cans I think. Hell, I might have drank from my own airplane yesterday!

Every engine shop I contacted said they do not resleeve LR short blocks.

Does anyone have any more info on the #5 problem? Does this potentially affect a certain VIN# range? Or just disco's built on a friday?

I'm still kosher with my 2000, but it would be great to know how much danger there is flying without a warranty!

Mike, thanks for the info... I'm gonna check my compression this weekend. BTW, my friend's disco is still in the shop!

Correction, friend's disco was finished last night...

According to the tech: Cracked block at the #3 ,#5 ,& #8 cylinders. Tech said they were caused by a stuck thermostat... How true that is, I don't know, just repeating the message.
