Frank or anyone else who's made the switch,

I've got just two quick questions about your conversion to diesel:

1. What did you do about the muffler? I remember reading you need to take it out or replace it. Looking at the M&D kit I couldn't really tell.

2. Did you drop the fuel tank and just 'wash' it with a gallons of diesel, or did you do something else to make sure the petrol was out of the system?

thanks

Make sure no gas in the lines and the is tank empty, then fill tank with diesel. A little gas won't hurt it. You just don't want it starting on pure petrol in the lines. In an emergency you can cut gelling summer blend diesel with a 10:1 mix of diesel to gas if no Kerosene is available. Not the greatest thing for the injector pump, just don't make a habit of it.

Thanks for the reminder Bruno. I had unsubscribed from that and the HS2800 list a bit ago when I was thinning my daily email intake.
Guess it would do well to get back on the HS2800 list.

I also thought some here might have an interest in the answers.

Peter,

Just spotted your post. Hope this helps:

1) Yes, the M&D kit comes with a complete exhaust system, but I decided to go with a stainless system from NRP (tell John that you are putting in a diesel, he has a different set-up - mention my name, if you like...), so I only kept the downpipe from the turbo, that comes in the kit.

2) Since I was changing the rear bumper anyway, I completely pulled the fuel tank and cleaned it out with lots of paper shop towels and mineral spirits. I ran the tank down to the fumes, before starting the project and maybe had only a gallon left in it... Since the tank is plastic, it was quite clean of the normal gunk that one would think would be in there. Once we got the locking collar off the fuel pump / sender unit, it was only a matter of pouring out the remaining gasoline/petrol, then taking some time to let things evaporate and wiping it out carefully. I also was careful to blow out the fuel lines with compressed air. I talked to some very knowledgeable people and they stressed to make sure that all the gasoline was out of the system. I spent a lot to have that motor and a little extra time and effort seemed worth it. As for the first time running the motor, I only added about 6 US gallons from a can, as that was all that the can would hold and everything worked out just fine.

Frank

PS Yes, you can get a hold of me through the Tdi group - thanks, Bruno :-)

PPS You can always switch to a daily digest, if the volume of emails is too great, Peter.
