Hey all --

First time here at the DiscoWeb boards. I've just recently purchased a 1996 Disco SE7; I already love the truck to death. However, I knew what I was getting myself into...

My "Check Engine" light is on, and I believe I've diagnosed the problem using my OBD II tester. It reads P1177 "Synchronization Fault" and P0116 "Engine Coolant Temp Sensor". The latter seems pretty straightforward, the sensor is probably just old and a new one is cheap. The engine isn't overheating or having problems on cold starts... Do you think I shouldn't worry about it right now? I'm a little strapped for cash.

But what, pray tell, is a Synchronization Fault? I can't seem to find anything about it anywhere. Are the valves on the fritz? Or maybe the spark plug fires irregularly? I have the classic rough idle now and then, and the ol' bitch has even stalled on me once (cuz I let it idle out instead of popping it into Drive). Do you think they're related? I figured the rough idle was just a dirty T-hose or stepper motor, or maybe even an improperly tuned idle. My SE7 idles at a little under 750 rpms.. is that standard?

I'm a new Rover owner, and I don't have much experience with DIY work, however I'm reasonably smart/capable--are the aforementioned problems difficult to address yourself?

Unrelated... Has anyone had good result with performance chips? Or for that matter, Flowmaster/etc exhaust systems? My Rover is emissions exempt because it's registered in a rural Virginia county. Are emissions perhaps a reason why exhaust systems don't seem popular?

Thanks for any help, and I look forward to being a part of the LR community.

Felix

Hey Felix,

I am actually pulling up "FMFR Correction At maximum Negative Value" as your P1177 code. Your "synchronization" looks to be a for a Ford. Type in your code here to see: http://www.iequus.com/obd_def.asp (this is right from the Tech section on this site by the way). Course, I still have no idea what that means, so can't help you there.

I have a 95, but my idle is usually right around the 750 mark.

If your idle is a little rough, you may want clean out your stepper motor, or even replace it if it is bad: http://www.discoweb.org/faq/stepper.htm

only other thing i could dig up was from manual:

Repair Code - 19.22.1177
PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes - LTFT too rich banks 1(A) and 2(B), (FMFR)

again no idea, but maybe someone will recognize it.
