I have a 96 disco with 100k on the clock. While traveling at 55+ mph I hear a grinding sound while barely having my foot on the accelerator. Under heavy load, no sound, under about 50-55, no sound, no foot on the gas, no sound. I have replaced the Roto and checked front u-joints they seem okay. What's next?
I don't feel like grabbing my ankles for the dealer again!!!

Check your wheel bearings...but then again, I've just replaced 3, so everything sounds like a wheel bearing going bad to me!

Jamie...3?
I thought most Rovers came with 4.
Say you replaced the other one just previous to doing the other 3...or just after?

Turn your stereo right up so you can't hear the grinding . At some point something may pack up thus highlighting what was wrong.

Do you have a lot of brake dust on your wheels?

Over the past 2 weeks I've change 3 WHEELS worth of bearings, brakes all around, spilled a quart of brake fluid, got 1 quart in the system successfully, changed steering rod, aligned wheels, all outside in 20 degree weather.....I know,, cry me a river..

Just hoping the 4th wheel bearings hold up for another month or so, parts are in garage.

check your rotoflex in the back, it is the rubber thing at the end of the rear drive shaft that connects it to the third member.

this is classic driveline vibration.

you'll probably need to replace the roto-flex.

or convert to standard u-joint

Rob - he actually replaced it already :-)

Jay - try to locate source of grinding by getting truck on stands and wandering about while its running. How long ago you replaced roto? Are you sure you tightened rear flange nut (one that pushes it onto pinion) properly? Try to shake shaft by hand near flange.

Have you checked your fluid levels in the diffs/xfer case?

yup good point geoff. put her up on axle stands and start diagnoisieng what the problem is. obliviously there is an aparent problem. check you diff fluids, check for wheel bearing play, and check all that was mentioned prior. but do not drive her too much farther or you will need a tow in and then that might mean the DEALER....
