Factory Jack is shot! Was out of fluid, refilled & it puked all over the garage floor. Is it worth buying a new one, or are they all garbage?

I think you missed the point, should I buy a new factory jack, or an aftermarket.

Once again, you missed the point. Is the factory jack just going to crap out on me again, ie: design defect, or is it generally a reliable item.

This guy is just "dickey mee" using a different name. He majors in missing the point.

Any quality one is fine. I carry a heavier duty bottle jack in the back of the car for times I dont have my Hi-Lift. I havent ever taken the factory one out.

I have never priced one from LR but I would sit down when they tell you it.

You can get a bottle jack for as I recall under $20 at Pep Boys or Sears. Personally I wouldn't splurge for the factory one unless you really need to keep it "original".

The "Gen-u-ine" one from AB is ~$175.00. I'm leaning toward a bottle jack from HD/Lowe's can't see any reason they won't work, but was wanting a 2nd opnion.

The LR jask is actually pretty unusual in that it is a 2 stage jack with a tall lift for its size/.weight. I've not seen them in the *marts

yeah, alot of them have screww out adjustment to take care of the two stage thing.

the best thing about the LR jack is htat it has that sweet V shapre thatcradles the axel nicely. the other jack you get are usually flat on top and you have to be alittle more cautious.

yeah, my jack puked up too - 99 DI

I tried to replace the hydraulic fluid and repair it with no luck. I still have it sitting around. One day I'll figure out how to completely fix it.

Ended up going to Sears for a replacement bottle jack.

Same situation here (as Kristopher). I bought a 12 ton jack for like $50... I know that is over kill but it still fits under the axle! The second stage of my replacement is the screw out type. It also has a flat top so I will probably weld a U thingy on the top for added safety.

I tried to replace the fluid first but no luck at all. I just got soaked. I was hoping to learn if someone has figured out how to do this.

My LR bottle jack literally exploded on me!! Fortunately it shot away from where I was sitting. What happened was that the 2nd section ripped open and shot oil all over the place! Scary thought...

Mine did the same thing and I got a local hydraulic specialist to fix it, it only cost £12.

I'm not sure about the V8's, but on the Tdi's the jack sits under the bonnet (hood) so it's one less lump so be flying about in the back.

My 2 concerns are keeping it in the factory location, (battery box), & piston length.

Alan,

do you know what was involved w/ the repair?

BTW,
How the hell is the jack secured in the box? Mine has the remains of some sort of rubber strap, but I can't tell where it would attach.

Bob, he just replaced the seals and put new fluid in. Apparently he does quite a few Land Rover jacks.
Mine is held in by a real heavy duty rubber band which goes round the jack and hooks round a hook. If I can find the digital camera, I'll try and post a photo.

The jack is in a plastic bag.

The shot was taken leaning over the wing, into the engine bay. This is directly behind the headlight.

I was told to keep an eye on mine while I'm in my warranty period. I was told that they had some trouble with some of them and that LR replaced them for free. Are you still in your warranty period?

Good Luck, Jamie

I bought myself a heavy duty 12 ton jack, it works nicely when I do repairs at home. But I still have my genuine in the car all the time. If you can't repair yours call a wrecking company and see if you can get a genuine "used" from them to keep in your car!!!!

The factory jack's top is rounded to fit around the axel - if you buy one with a flat top I guess you don't place it under the axel .. where do you place it?
Btw my factory jack has a piece of velcro to keep it in place.

Jakob - use same jacking points as before. Only thing you might want to add - put old latex/resin glove on top. It will add better "grabbing" and will protect antirust cover a bit...

Jakob,

Do you have bins in your cargo area? I put mine there as far forward in the bin as possible. I secured the lid of the bin just in case we ever roll.

Good Luck, Jamie

Oh geez, I just realized you meant where do you place it when you're using it instead of where do you place it IN your truck!!

Sorry about that!! :-) :-)

Jacks ... Schmacks! Call AAA!
I once put a hole in the shoulder of the "freeway" when my jack sunk into the tarmac and down into the sand! Good thing I wasn't under the truck at the time. It's something new every week over here!
