I have a 99 DII and I am having trouble on deciding which shocks to get. I am thinking about the Rancho 9000 or OME. I will be using OME 779 springs in the front and keeping the air bags in the rear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,

Nick

If OME matches the springs to their shocks like they say, then I'd get those for the front. The rear is just a matter of preference, I really don't know which is a better shock.

what OME matches may be different from what you want. OME-suggested shocks are on the soft side - talk to Expedition Exchange about your needs.

Shane - nearly 60% of a Disco's weight is on the rear wheels, and the bulk of it contributes to the c.g. height. The rear shocks may make a difference between a lean and barrell roll in an accident avoidance manoever.

Don't get Ranchos. I had them for almost 2 years and they sucked. Getting rid of them is one of the best modifications I've mad to my truck.

From what I know about springs in general, the shock absorber is there mainly to attenuate the "bouncing" of the spring. A properly matched shock will attenuate the spring so that it's at what's called "critical damping". The spring should compress over a bump from it's initial height, then extend slightly over it's initial height and then come to rest back at it's original height. If it's underdamped, like when the shock is wore out then you get the bouncing. If it's overdamped then it compresses and goes right back to it's original height very quickly, which makes for a very stiff ride. The shock really doesn't do much in a lean. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Shane - they could be longer (not just softer or stiffer), and thus allowing more travel - contributing to roll situation that Peter is talking about. Though to get there you need to take sway bars off.

Nick - between Rancho and OME - definetly go with OME. Ranchos has nasty record of breaking.Phone up EE and speak on what exactly you need - John or Ho will sort you out in matter of minutes :-)

i have fox racing 8-way adj shox. Couldn't be happier with them, such an improvement over the stock D1 shocks. I love the adj on them. Doesnt feel like it has a 2" lift.

Cheers

What about the Bilsteins? A bit stiff but a well made product. Im leaning toward them on my 94 disco with a two inch lift. Of course it is the wifes vehicle and rarely sees dirt.
For my Rangie, I looked at this company as a cheap alternative since it is a beater toy.
http://www.bc4x4.com/pr/2001/doetsch/ . They have other versions and run from 40-55 bucks each. Thinking to trying them on my Classic to open up the suspension a bit more without cones. Gordo

I have had bilsteins on my 94 disco for a couple of years now and although they are a little stiff they are great and make the truck handle much better on the road

I have OME shocks and springs and couldn't be happier. They are not to stiff and still provide a comfortable ride on the highway. I would highly recommend the OME combo.
