hey guys - i have heard that the aluminum 3.9 L motors in the D1's were once originally used in the early 80's or so in buicks or oldsmobiles. any truth to this? if so, what is the cubic inch size of these motors. also, do the 4.6L motors use the same blocks as the 3.9's and just larger heads and different fuel delivery or different all together? if the blocks are different will they share my motor mounts? what is the model number on the manual trans? for example t-case = LT230 / trans = ? thanks tom |

Call Ian at RPI in England and check out their website, rpiv8.com. He will talk you ears off about the rover engines. If I am not mistaken he claims the 4.6 is a direct bolt up in a disco. Also, you can buy a brand new engine from RPI with new starter and alternator and have it shipped for less than a long block from the dealer, almost 2/3 the price. Even cheaper than used 4.6's here in the states. |

I put an RPi 4.6 in my '95 D1. Exact replacement for my 3.9. Only difference was that it needed a bushing on the front end of the crank, which they supplied. The 4.6 has a longer stroke on the crank to generate the greater displacement. I got a full engine (lower half of intake manifold to oil pan, heads included, flywheel to timing cover) that was balanced, blueprinted, match cc'd heads, match ported & polished heads to intake, with a high torque cam. Total cost delivered to my house near San Diego, CA was about $6000. I just had to bolt on the ancilliaries. Bolted right up to my R380 5-speed. Significant performance improvement. |

That's awsome. I hope to get an RPI engine in a year or two. I want to wear out my 3.9 first. I am going to start with gearing and lockers this year. |
