Ok, 97 D1- 76k intermittent tach- (for 5 months now)cleaned the terminal and crimped a new connector- still only works for a few minutes in the morning or when the engine is cold for a few minutes- voltage output is 14.75 at the battery with headlights, aux lights (hella's) seat heater and everything else I could turn on-no charging issues- is there a capacitor or resistor which governs the tach output? Thought I saw it on an old thread but no luck now- what is the correct tention for the belt? will a worn tentioner cause this? I have a bit of a cold idle “chirp” I changed the belt last week and the routing is correct.. still the same problem. I hate to buy a new alt if I can replace a 1.00 part thanks P

I had the same problem with my tacho…..intermittent operation then none at all, replaced the connector on the back of the alternator and it worked fine till the wire snapped….I think that the under bonnet heat causes fatigue in the wire, I replaced a section of the wire and presto…problem gone. Hope this helps Cheers from Australia

yeah i just used a leatherman and crimped mine to make a tighter connection and my alternator woes stopped, ie bad tach stopped. |

That connector for the tach, is bolted on the back of the alternator with a 8mm, mabey just take it off and give it a good cleaning and reinstall the little connector to the back of the alternator. |

peteb wins the gold star- thanks! while considering the new wire splice - got out my trusty 8mm- wow 4 turns... did not seem loose when I installed the new connector- now going on 2 days of non stop tach... wow how the simple things in life deliver such enjoyment P |
