Well guys,
I lost my power steering pump the other day and finally got the chance to swap it out tonight. Everything back together, including a new upper radiator hose and thermostat and she fired right up. Engine had warmed up while idling, and bled the ps. Anyhow, I went for a short, about a mile test drive and suddenly began to lose power. Hmm, must have been something got wet from excessive fluids which were under the hood. Barely made it back to the house, and pulled into the garage. It seemed to be doing alright if I was under 1.5k RPMs but above that it sputtered, and nearly died. I popped the hood, engine still running to notice coolant smell and lots of smoke. Shut her down and shined the light around but didn't really see anything, where the coolant was coming from, definitely not my new hose. I crawled down to take a peek and there was coolant flowing abundantly down the exhuast. I'm guessing some major problems, such as head gasket, etc. I'm at a loss of words right now.. what to do what to do.. Later.. Robert S

Hi,

I've had exactly the same problem this week - the air hose came off the MAF after having a new exhaust and snorkel fitted, causing the engine to run slightly hotter

Result was that I lost power on the next run, with a smokey oily smell and coolant everywhere (Temperature Gauge half-way though - it appears if the water level drops the sensor doesn't notice the temp increase)

Cause was a split on the underneath of the 2" long hose above the thermostat connecting the heater pipes - water ran down the manifolds washing all the old oil off

Check this hose on yours

Paul

make sure the thermostat is sitting flush and that the gasket didn't get folded over at all. for some reason it took me forever to get the thermostat and gasket all sitting perfectly, and just kept leaking until i got it all right.

also, do you have the original expansion tank? if it is, may want to check and see if that is leaking. when mine went, didn't have any visible cracks, but as soon as it was pressurized, coolant poured out.

I am loosing coolant as well. Very slowly though. I fill it to the cold mark and then it goes down two inches and stays. Can't figure where it is coming from. Crawled underneath the truck yesterday and it looks like it is coming from underneath. Also see what looks like oil on the gearbox. Pissed off. Of course the warranty just ran out about 4K ago.

Does this sound like a head gasket?

Robert,
Refill the coolant tank, start the engine, let it idle and check the thermostat area, like Robbie said. You said you "shut her down and then shined the light around". Shine the light around while the engine is running.
I don't know if you removed any of the other hoses while working on your rig, and I don't know if the Disco's have the small hose that runs from the radiator by the filler plug, over to the intake plenum, just after the MAF. If they do, check the connection...mine was slowly leaking. It would seep down the valve cover, down the front corner of the engine, and end up dripping under the driverside front corner of the engine.
It looked for all the world to be a leak out the front cover or head gasket.

Well, thanks for the tips. I double checked the thermostat housing, and sure enough, that is where it was leaking from. It was running back and down the block, down the exhaust, etc. All seems well now.. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I had a water pump installed and had the lower radiator hose replaced by the dealership. I noticed a slow leak afterwards. Check the lower radiator hose. The small little hose of the lower radiator tubing is difficult to get on sometimes and the LR clamps have very little surface area for clamping. I went to Home Depot and replaced the clamp after pushing the hose as far as it will go and I haven't had a problem since.
