I just bought a keyless entry remote for my 96 disco off of ebay...I was told by the guy to take it to the dealer to have it programmed, but i also heard that there are ways to do it manually...does anyone know if there is such a way?!? THANKS!!

Adam,

On a 96 you need to take to someone with the computer. Not neccesarily the dealer. On 95 and earlier you can program another way.

There are instructions in the owners manual on how to do this for a 98 D1. Not sure if it's the same for other years?

One button remote can be done at home. 2 button remote requires the computer.

Adam,
I have a '96 SD and bought an extra remote on Ebay. You have to take it to a dealer. I followed the instructions and even had my local mechanic try- he printed out instructions from a website- all to no avail. I've heard some LR dealers will do it for free but LR Portland (OR) charged me $35.
Cheers,
Paul.

Just to confirm what people have said - the one button remote used on 1994 and 1995 can be programmed at home. The two button remote used until 1999 can only be programmed with the special LR test system that can talk to the security system

When programming a two-button remote you will need to have both remotes available at the same time, as the system has to be trained to recoznize them all at once.

Two button remotes can be transferred from one vehicle to another by reprogramming. If you are clever and own multiple Land Rovers you can program one remote to operate more than one vehicle.

So if you have a remote, buy and program another remote while the first one is home, the first one will no longer work the truck until you program both together.

1999 and newer D2 remotes are not vehicle specific, but you cannot transfer them to another vehicle unless you have their code, which was printed on a paper tag when the remote was new. This code can be read by the LR test system if you have the vehicle attached to the remote you want to transfer.

1999 and newer remotes also require the LR test gear for programming.

One more note of caution - you can only program security a limited number (9) of times on a 1999-up Rover. Mess with it too many times and you will end up buying a new ECU (big money).

Finally - the switchblade key remotes on 38a Range Rovers are only configurable at Rover. They are not transferrable to another vehicle.

But all that only applies to North American models (and certain Euro ones as well)?

I have a 1996 Disco with the two button remote that doesn't need any programing at all. Most likely because there is no alarm/security system on the truck. It just locks and unlocks the doors. The owners manual lists it as a "keyless entry system".
