So far my 98 D1 LE has not given me any problems except at 80k on the dot the check engine light (amber) came on.

Searched archive and read interesting post on check engine light (some are scary e.g. cracked block....) and how to fix and/or reset!

Don't feel any difference in the driving performance so I keep on driving till I get code read or to the dealership following week (been busy moving into my new home, and no time for the Rover right now)!

Anyway, check engine light disappeared (after driving about 100 miles since 80k). I didn't disconnect the battery or try to fix/clean any of the parts suggested in the post. Added another 179+ miles and then check engine light reappeared! Weird!

So far, all I have done on my Disco since I bought it used are (in the following order): changed the engine oil/filter/auto-trans & diff oil @ 78k, light wheeling at Hollister CA, had dealership do a recall/replaced exhaust manifold @ 79k (covered by LR), smog test and it passed 79.5k, and don't think it has anything to do but installed Kenwood amp a month ago! No lite with all the activities.

Last two weeks since it turned 80k, the weather in my area (San Francisco Bay Area) has seen a lot of rain and some flooding; been doing some water crossing but not too deep to soak up the engine!

What's puzzling to me is that color amber is not a service reminder (according to some of the post for Disco 1); however, light turned on exactly at 80k. I was advised by the dealership to take it in (being cautious not to be taken to the cleaners). Anyone experience this around 80k (or there abouts) on their D1, and lite coming on and off? What was the out come? Appreciate the feedback. Thx in advance.

The amber check engine light is not a service reminder. Without knowing which error code was thrown, it's impossible to guess what the problem was. However, since the light went off, the computer does not sense a permanent fault, obviously. It could be something like an intermittent misfire on a cylinder due to the wet weather, but you won't know for sure until you get the code read.

You probably want to invest in a OBD2 code reader at this point.

Sounds similar to what my 98 D1 did at around 65K miles. I had the Check Engine light come on, then disappear again after several days of normal driving. It would then come on very soon after turning off, like within 1/2 hour. Then another week or so before repeating that cycle. Even though the condition is not serious, and can "reset" the CE light, the error codes are stored in the ECU. Plugging into the OBDII revealed codes which suggested the O2 sensors. I replaced both FORWARD O2 sensors and that completely resolved my CE light situation.

Suggest you get the codes examined using OBDII diagnostic equipment.

Thx! When I get the code read, I post back!

On my other vehicle at home (Jeep pick-up), I got an check engine light passed 150k+ mile marker; and it was O2 sensor needed to be replaced.

So I hope it's something like this minor on the Disco. Thx folks for the feedback!

Same thing here happen when I got some crappy gas on my car, Check Engine light came on, re-filled with Premium and it went away! Also the second time, It happen right after my coolant expansion tank exploded. I had to reset the code by unplugging the battery, light went away and it has not come back for quite some time!!!!!
