In installing a new Y-pipe the manual I'll put in 2 new gaskets and a new flange. But the workshop manual also says to use some sort of sealant. Can anyone advise?

can't imagine using any sealant, considering the temps. when i replaced mine, just used two gaskets where it meets the down pipes, and the flange should already be on the y-pipe to mate to the muffler pipe.

Are they talking about using some anti-seize maybe? I agree with Robbie, can't see why you would use sealant in a high temp area.

Replaced the stock Y pipe last weekend in my 97 Discovery using an NRP unit. I did use a high temp gasket sealant just enough to hold the gasket to the Y pipe flange. I tried it without the sealant and was unsuccessful in keeping it aligned to the exhaust bolts.
Just a little worked for me (just tack it in place).

The NRP Y-pipe came with 6 new nuts to replace the original stock ones(exhaust manifold to Y-pipe connection) and new SS bolts/nuts for the other end of the pipe (connection to the muffler). I'd recommend not to reuse these, they look well used. I had to drop the front sway bar out the way in order to expedite the removal and installation process. I just couldn't do it without its removal. The sway bar removal operation was done in short order (10 minutes) and the whole operation from beginning to end took me approx. 90 minutes and 2 beers. I had time left over to do the same on my 87 Range Rover. The 87 was a lot easier due to the 3" lift.

There is an "olive" gasket that can help join the Y pipe to the exhaust pipe. About $18 at the dealer. A lot cheaper elsewhere.
