I have 2000 Disco series 2 with a trans problem. When I scan the computer I get code 743 (4 th gear ratio incorrect) I have reset the odb II unit and have got it to recode while pulling a long grade with light throtle. The vehicle was in 3rd gear at the time the check eninge light came on and after about 2 seconds shifted to 4th gear, when I pluged my code reader in I got the same 743 code. (the beat that I can guess is that it thinks that it has already shifted to 4th when it is still in 3rd. My local Trans shop can't help with the problem. They say that there could be an internal mechincal problem, or it could be electronic or both. They can't check the C.P.U. due to the fact that Land Rover will not release any of their softwear or service bullents to the general public. The trans shop recomended to have the dealership "Flash The trans' C.P.U." and reload the softwear as well as do a complete electronic check. Has anybody had a simular problem????? If so what did it take to get rid of it? Thanks, Bill |

According to another post further down it is your Mass Air Flow Sensor. Just replace it and all will be fine. Hope this helps. Zane |

our '99 DII has the same trans fault code as well as the MAFS code - dealer said it is probably just the MAFS - I'm just going to clean the MAFS and see if that helps |

You sure you got the right code. 743 is a Torque Converter Control (Lock up) solenoid problem. 734 is a 4th gear ratio error. The transmission has sensors that monitor a lot of things inside the transmission. If it detects that there is excessive slippage between shifts then it will throw a gear ratio error. Sometimes the error code can also be caused by other errors in the engine computer, i.e. Mass Air Flow Sensor can cause the engine to hesitate that can cause the gear ratio error. So if you got engines codes then I would suggest fixing them first. But if you got only the transmission code, then you might have some internal slippage causing the gear ratio error. If it's the TCC code then your lock up solenoid is failing and can easily be replaced by a shop. Either way, you should clear the code but after you clear the codes, you have to relearn the transmission, which means you reset all the baselines for the transmission. There is a specific drive sequence to relearning depending on the code. If you don't relearn, the original code might reappear. Most transmission shops will not work on LR's because of the mystery (lack of information) from ZF not LR and because they are just so expensive and difficult to get parts for. Hope this helps. |

Replace the MAF. See this alot and the MAF has repaired this almost every time. LRNA put out a bulletin for the exact issue you are writing about. |
