I'm looking for a good but not too expensive CB radio and antenna for my DI. Some say Cobra, some Kenwood, some Radio Shack, but I don't know much about them. I'd prefer something somewhat compact if possible. Also, whats your comments on whip antenna or stick? Thanks.

Take a look at the Cobra 75, it is very compact. AS far as an antenna, I went with a four foot K-40 fiberglass antenna. A local CB shop highly recommended this antenna.

Robin, it all depends on what you are trying to do and where you plan to mount things.

Basically all box stock CB radios are 4 watts of power which means the only thing that will make them work well is the antenna.

Buy a radio that you like the looks of and for ease of install that you think will work, the big question is the antenna.

Antenna's mostly all work the same as well, but depending on where you mount them and what you are using them for will make the big difference.

If sitting still a good whip antenna will give you better range and sound quality (if you set it up correctly)

If you are driving you would prefer a stiffer antenna.

Either way the higher you mount it, it will normally perform better.

As far as adding an Amp, don't do it on a small cheap radio that can not be tuned. The cobra 75 is non-tunable and all radio shack products are non-tunable.

If you are looking for a CB that can be used with a linear then you need to look at something better and bigger.

I have the Cobra 75 WX ST and love it. MANY other folks on here have it and feel the same way. I hooked it up to a Wilson "Lil Wil" 38" magnetic whip antenna. All you have to do is plug the antenna in, tune it (using an SWR meter) by lengthening or shortening the antenna. It took me 10-15 min. to tune it. I love it, and the magnet is very strong.

I have a Unden pro520xl with a 3 foot firestik. I like it a lot i didnt bother to tune it but it works good enough for me. I wanted to be sure that i got one with squelch control and RF Gain.

I chose a cb with a swr meter and adjustment on the face, I run one of two antenna's
I use a spare tire mount type with a quick disconnect, I run a long, 6" for when i know that i am going on a long road trip, and a short 3" super flexable antenna when off roading, the quick disconnect is also handy for the occasional parking garage that i can fit in!
Remember this, the higher the antenna is above the roof, the better your performance will be.
Peter.
