Any body have any thoughts on rear lamp guards for a DI.

Yes? No? Maybe?

How about genuine LR product requiring drilling, versus the aftermarket version which clips behind lens?

Any opinions on these item appreciated!

No. They'll be "removed" on the trail by something other than you and a screwdriver.

It depends on how you drive. I have cracked the rear lenses on every truck I have ever owned. I have the guards on all of my rear lights right now. 2 of them are dented and one of my reflectors is smashed.
They are kind of expensive, though. I would wait until someone is selling used ones. I got all 4 of mine for $100.

I don't really see any difference in the protective qualities of the drilled vs. non-drilled. I have the drilled.

In NJ you won't pass inspection with them.

Thanks for your responses, I think for the time being I might hold off.

I can't quite get my head around the benefits of drill mounting them versus the clips. Seems to me that if you do catch something you either tear up the metal work, or tear out the light assembly.

In the short term it seems like protectors for the bumper lights might be the way to go, as they as at the rear leading edge of the vehicle.

Yes...Those are the ones that are dented on mine. If they weren't there, the lights probably wouldn't be either.

There are genuine ones that don't drill in. My bumper lamp guards fell off. The upper lamp guards have been pretty useful, but they are more for a rugged look. Find them used and install them yourself. Just watch out, because they get really rusty.

The powder coating on the genuine ones are pretty crappy. On my brother's XD, it's chipped off of all four and they look like crap.

As to the upper lamp guards. I think the design LR uses isn't very good. They stick out so far that they get caught on virtually every overhanging tree branch on tight trails. I've seen more than my fair share of them get ripped off on the trail by a tree branch that gets caught in the "guard".

Now the CT ones on the other hand look pretty cool and seem like a much better design.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman
