ive got a small possibly big problem. i picked my truck up from the shop today, its a 96 D1, and noticed the steering wheel was off center to the right, and when i pushed on the brakes i had a real bad pull to the left. the steering also felt really light. also i made a right hand turn and the steering got really heavy, and what sounded like the power steering pump made a grinding sound and the engine stalled. i checked the fluid, its full, and everything "looks" fine. it was at the shop to have the tie rod ends replaced, and the suspension bushings replaced. the shop had already had the truck for a week, and i needed the truck back, so thats why i didnt take it right back to them. so does anyone have a clue on what the problem might be. im still waiting on a return call from the shop to try and get this solved, i justed wanted an idea of what i might be dealing with. thanks conor |

Just a guess, but sounds like the shop should have done an alignment after replacing your tie rod and bushing. Tie rod and steering go hand and hand. Larry |

True, i talked to the shop, and they said they got it as close as possible. i guess they thought it wasnt nessecary to tell me that they couldnt do an alignment and should probably get one done myself. i did go get an alignment, and that fixed the light steering, but the steering wheel is still off center and still pulls to the left under braking just not as bad. i guess il just have to reset the center my self. thanks for the suggestion conor |

Actually, adjusting the alignment is easy. You can do it yourself (or have the shop do it). Search the archives and there will be plenty to tell you how. It only takes minutes to complete. |

Talking about steering alignment, check this site out : http://www.sf.hiof.no/~frodehaa/disco.html if you'd like to do it on your own. |

i went ahead and got it aligned at a tire place, figured theyd get it right the first time. ive come to the conclusion that the alignment was not the cause of my problems. yeah the steering is tight now, and the off center steering wheel can be easily fixed(i did a search), but it still pulls/veers pretty bad to the left under braking, and pulls/veers to the right mildly when you lift your foot off the gas. not sure what the problem could be, but its definitely not going back to the same place the did the work in the first place. conor |

If the pull is when you hit the brakes, check the brakes. Maybe there is something wrong with the right side so you're not getting even braking. Any scraping noise when you hit the brakes?

How did you actually fix the off center steering wheel? Do you have to adjust something on the underside of the truck in inside on the wheel itself? |

i havent fixed it yet, but if i read right in the archives, you need to adjust the drag link, i think thats what its called, but its the one in the front. to do that just loosen the clamps on the ball joints and then turn it either clockwise or counter-clockwise. i cant remember which way moves the wheel to the right or left. conor. |

Your brake problem sounds like oil contamination to the right side caliper/pads |

Conor, Check your caliper for a seized piston. Your piston may not be retracting causing the Rover to pull to one side. I also had a similar problem with my Rover which was a radial bearing and swivel pin problem in the left swivel housing. Larry |
