what kind of work is involved with changing the lifters? there is a presistant tapping. is there anyway to rid this tap or is an engine tear down my next project?

Phil,
Developed a tap in my 94, so we replaced two lifters. Wasn't very hard, need to remove valve covers, intake manifold, rocker shafts and tray gasket then with a little persuasion you can pop out the old lifters. Before you replace any lifters try running a quart of marvel mystery with your oil and do some highway driving, then change the oil as this is likely to loosen up a lot of crap.

Phip,

Fairly simple job as seth saids. I would also recommend replaceing the rockers and rocker shafts while your at it.

Are you sure it's lifters?? Lot's of time the noise is the rocker arms.

Not exactly sure if it is lifter.. Sound is a tapping that is loudest when idling in gear.. The tapping ussually starts after 10-15 minutes of driving. It sppeds up with the engine revs and dissappears (or seems to) when truck gets up tyo speed..Sounds seems to come from rear passenger side of engin block.

Plenty Thanks for the advice...

Is there any tips on determining if its rocker arms or lifters? ...before I really get in there..

Phil,
That really sounds like the same problem we had.We ran a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil mixed with the oil for about two weeks then changed the oil. Got a lot of crap out with the oil,the tap then became intermittant, and has now completely gone away.
If you want to check your rockers just pull the valve cover and grab each rocker and see if you can move it, there shouldn't be any play.

Good luck, Seth

Phil
You can check it by removing the valve cover and with the engine running slip a .050 feeler guage in between the valve and rocker. If the noise disappers then that is the valve with the noise. Once you identify the valve, it's easy to replace the lifter first before you go into the lifter.

It's kind of messy but if you make a small cardboard dam and place it on the lower part of the head it shouldn't be too messy.
