Does anyone have tie down points in the cargo area of their D1? I havn't seen any with them and was wondering if they were available or if I would have to devise something.....Getting pretty sick of my stuff trading places back there.
Thanks

Kevin,

If you lift the rug and pad you'll see some plugged holes near the corners of the cargo area.

Remove the plastic plugs, and you'll expose the threads. Now, I don't remember the bolt size, but its metric with a metric thread pitch. Figure it out by trial and error.

If you don't find any locally, you can get cargo tie downa at mcmastercarr.com

I made a set (4) for mine. Bolts, nylon lock nuts, washers, spacers, "D" rings, sheet metal, not that hard at all, and they're very strong. When I don't need them, the "D" rings lay flat. The spacers are there to keep them from sinking into the padding when I tightened them down.

posted at the same time...

The bolt size is 11mm (that's what many people here have said before). I never found any that size though. Make some for yourself, it's not that hard at all. Get some ideas, and jot them down on paper.

I don't have a digital camera Ed, but I may be able to scan a couple of polaroids. I'll try to do that as soon as I can, but I'm very busy.

You can use a 7/16" fine thread grade 8 bolt. I just put ties downs in by 99 Discover series 1. I used the tie down points for a discovery series 2. I then bolted them down with grade 8, 7/16" fine thread bolts. I also made a steel block for each tie down point that fits underneath the tie down, so that it is at the same height as the steel ribs that are molded into the floor. I cut a small slit in the carpet for the tie down ring. You do not see the bolts. I used a tap to verify correct size and thread before buying the bolts. They work great.

Ok, I've tried these suggestions and this is what I've got. Matthew was right, 11mm bolts are hard to find so I tried to sub in the bolts that Dale had mentioned. They may have actually worked, but it appears that "Nigel" still had his beer goggles on when he tacked the captive nuts under the body (not one of them lined up with the holes in the floor!) So on to plan B. I am going to get smaller and longer bolts so that I might pass them through the captive nut and put yet another nut on to hold the tie down in place. I want to do it real clean, and I know I should cut the captive nuts right off....I'll see what tomorrow brings I guess!

I bought some of these at a local 4x4 shop and used sheet metal screws to install. I actually looked for mounting points with double flooring for a stronger install. I trimmed the rubber mat around the bases so they sit flush. When I am not using the tie downs, the rings unclip, store in the door pocket, leaving a flat cargo floor. I cut small flaps in the carpet so the bases are hidden when the rings are removed. They are pretty rugged and have not come loose after pretty bumpy trails.

Those are the tiedowns that I use as well. They are made by ANCRA and are aircraft cargo tiedowns that are rated at 2500lbs. They are the same tiedowns that we use at FedEx in our aircraft and I have never seen one break. Just make sure you mount them properly. I wouldn't use a sheet metal screw, I used machine bolts with a backing plate and nyloc nuts.

Are those available on the NET? I can't exactly go to a shop here and buy them.

I don't understand why you guys would want a tie down for? I actually enjoy my stuff coming out of the bags and flying around in the back... makes for a good game of pick up the crap off the floor and hope my eggs didn't break :S
Seriously though, I ended up drilling through the floor and using almost the same type of pins, bolted them through. Think I went overboard as I only use the tie downs to hold my groceries in place.. wish i thought of sheet metal screws...

Sandman, try a motorcycle shop and ask for ANCRA tiedowns. 4x4 connection used to carry them but I did not see them listed now.

Dunno how extreme you wanna go, but this is my cargo area:

2
as mentioned earlier, I used the 4 built-in holes that the truck comes with and am using the holes I got from the seats and the rear belts.

If you go to westmarine.com and type 'pad eye' into the sight search engine you will find lots tie down choices with hinges, backing plates, stainless etc.

The thing that is hanging from the rear headliner is a bungee net I did that is hooked on to 4 hooks per side and that is where all my "non-waterproof" stuff go :-).

It cost me 11,000LL (4$) so that was NICE...

Dubai is a GO very very soon (not sure when, will call ya - do I have you number? if not please text me at +966 54 38 66 49)

Looks good man. Now I want one.

Source for nets? How much weight can you put up there. Where exactly are the hooks anchored at?

Apexdisco,
The net was made out of 4mm bungee cord (I think I purchased 20m of it) and I did the net myslef (Group Scout Leader then).
I got 8 6mm stainless steel "O" hooks and screwed them to a square rail that was hidden under the headliner. There were already 2 holes per side, and I just made 2 more on each side.
The net carries ALL my clothing (a lot of stuff), spare boots, 4 people tent, sleeping bags, and other miscelaneous stuff.
Nice thing I did was feature a "draw-string" tightener so taht everything stays packed up regardless of the weight and size.
I keep joking with my girl that I'll put her in it if she misbehaves (no nasty thoughts please :-))
I would say the net has carried at most 75lbs, and usually has 20lbs in it (for hardcore wheelin')
