I have had a stroke of terrible luck, I rolled my Disco at about 45mph went over two and a half times. It looks pretty good considering, broke off both rearviews, and smashed the roof. The back doors and the rear door open and close fine, but the front two are jammed closed. I am planning on cutting the roof off and replacing it with a new one, and in the progress install a rollcage. I just wondered if anyone had gone through this or a simmilar project, and would take ANY advice or ideas that you can contribute.
Thanks a ton

I have a rolled DS2 in my garage that sounds pretty similar to yours. I considered doing the same thing, but it is too impractical. It will never be as safe or roadworthy as before the roll even with a cage.

Now - if you are planning to build a dedicated trail rig then you might be on to somthing.

I assume everyone is OK. Good luck.

Everyone made it out safely too, thanks for asking. I got a bruised spine, but it will heal in some time.

You would probably do better by parting it out and buying something with the proceeds.

Check the Landrover magazines , sometimes they have complete bodyshells on offer.
With all the aluminium panels, distortion is likely after a crash, and a new bodyshell will save a lot of sorting

Jess there is a place out of Miami that sells a complete shell for 599.00 on ebay. Not sure how a title would work if your going with an all new shell.

Jess just looked at your quote in your profile. Have to ask did you write that before or after the roll?

Jess,

Just my 2 cents. I really love my truck and would more than likely rebuild it should I wreck it,,, but and thats an emphasis on but ...it would depend on the extent of the damage.

I know of a Defender here locally that recently suffered frame damage. It was a 95, clean and in great shape. The body only suffered a bit of damage to the bumper and grille. The dealership charged 60hrs of labor to move the body to a new frame. Keep in mind this was a body to new frame swap. That was what they quoted but what it took was a bit more. This truck has been there for over 3 months.

In your case you will be moving some good parts to a new frame and shell. You are really looking at a taxing project. If I were in this situation I would look for a d1 that has suffered engine woes or transmission issues where the seller is ready to dump it for 2k or so. We find them all the time. In the long run you will save yourself a ton of time and money.

You may even swap some of your better parts as time goes on and sell off your extras.

Best of luck,

Will

It's not hard to do a cut and shut on a turret much easier than changing the whole shell,as long as the rest of it is ok.

Thanks for the input, I do now know that the frame in fact is NOT out of alignment... It runs and drives like a dream. So I have my badly beaten roof, and, not known till now, bent doors, except the back gate. Some of the guys down here have come up with an attracive idea. To create a new sort of beast out of the old rhino.. a roll cage with four main bars (one where the back gate was one over the back seats one over the driver and passneger and one up and over the top of the wind shield) installed and to cut the whole body off from the bottom of the windows on the doors. Discard all the doors, and have the local fab shop put together new soft doors and roof. Sounds kinda cool, faster and less expensive. I have some talent at welding, and over fourty years worth in guidance at the local shop. Dunno sounds like fun, and I will have to wait and get another car for a more comfortable daily driver. havent worked out what do do with the back gate, may cut it down to a half door weld it off smooth, and then rhino line the whole tub. How does that grab ya?

-By the Way, the qoute was added long before the incident!!! Fate has terrible tell-tale signs.

"This truck has been there for over 3 months."

Incompetent!

Two guys can do a DI or DII frame in a couple days. A D90 in a day.

Body shell is much much harder though.

i work in a body shop and it definatly shouldn't take 3 months to switch frames.but as far as replacing a roof goes don't try it your self.there is probobly a lot of unseen damage, and if the doors aren't opening smoothly, the front of the body is bent.
