How do I remove the rear upper arm ball joint from its bracket once I have the assembly off the vehicle and in a vise? I have removed the 30mm main castle nut from the joint itself and removed the two large nuts/bolts that hold the two upper arm sections together. I then placed the assembly in a vise and removed the two small 10mm bolts that secure the ball joint to the A-Frame center bracket. The ball joint itself appears to be "pressed" into the bracket. I have sprayed the assembly with PB Blaster and used my 4-lb Engineer Hammer, but the ball joint will not release from the assembly. How do I get this thing out so I can replace it with my shiny new one? Hopefully, someone has done this before and knows the trick. |

Brian, As far as i know you will need a press to push the old one out, as well as to press the new one in. I have a 94 and purchased a 40 ton press so I could do that ball joint and the rest of the suspension bushings. It's easier if you cut off the bolt ears with a hacksaw so the casting has some purchase. Seth |

Seth, Thanks for your reply. Actually, I thought that a press would be needed. I have a 6-ton press (it can scaled to 12-ton), and I am wondering if it could POSSIBLY do the job. I would like some sort of idea before I cut the ears off of the ball joint. What do you think? Actually, I bought my press for the same purpose as you, but I have found it "lacking" for some of the larger bushings. I have a '97 D1. |

Seth has the right idea. Cut the ears and press it out. Now as far as the press is concerned, I worked the piss out of a 12 ton air over hydraulic pressing the joint out of a '90 that spent most of it's life up north. It was so tight I wouldn't stand in front of it. I regulated the air from around the corner. Peace. |

Yeah, I wish I had stepped up in the press department. I did not know how much (or little) I would use it, so I bought one cheaply. Believe me, I know the value of nice tools--the nicer the tool, the easier the job. Seems that all this press is good for was the panhard rod bushings and to make my wife say "When did you buy that?!" |
