Sorry for posting a subject that's been beat to death, but I couldnt really get the input I need from the hour I spent reading old posts. Im wanting the upgrade either my tires or suspension on my 70K 98 D1. I really cant afford to do both at the moment. Im looking at the 245.75.16 Dunlop R/Ts and doing some minor triming to the rear quarters or a OME HD spring and shock system. The truck is drivin daily about 10mi per day and off road on the weekends. Nothing to extreme. Im leaning to the tires right now cause Im afraid the HD lift will result in driveline vibs which will cost more to fix and the lift with the stock tires might look kinda stupid. Already getting made fun of for the training wheels even though Im pulling out the jeeps left and right. Any cons to the tires first and lift sometime later. 6 mo to a year later. Thanks.

lift it!
then when you see how silly it looks lifted w/ little tires, you'll want to do tires sooner.
save your pennies.

Open the pocket book and let the money pit rolling. Any way you look at it you will always want to spend more so your question should be what to get first, second, etc.

I think that is what he is asking, Steve.

And John, I'd say wait until you can do both of those together; I hate lifted trucks with tiny tires the same as stock-sprung LR's with huge rubbers in the wheelwells. IMHO, they both look like shit, so maybe you should invest in, say, recovery gear? or maybe protection? Seriously, if you bypass the sexy stuff, and go straight for the necessities, you'll be one step ahead of the crowd.

Simplify

Lift, then tires.

If you have any problems after lifting (vibrations, clunks, etc...) at least you will be able to rule out the tires as your cause.

Then, once all is good, then do your tires.

CB lift and keep the stock shocks and get tires, then get the rest of the OME HD set up when you have the $$$

actually, Ron has the right idea if cash is tight and you want to enjoy your vehicle off road.
but most importantly, use the thing, learn how to drive it, and have fun......

decide how much lift you want or are comfortable with, and what size tires you want and what is needed for them. A CB lit is a good idea. I bought a used set of OME sprigns and shocks for my first lift. It cost me less then half of new. From that i gauged if i wanted more and how big of tires i could fit. I eventualyl went with a bigger RTE lift and 33's. If you put on a CB lift, maye with used springs or homemade spacers, then get the tires you want and when you have the $, invest it in a better spring/shock combo, or a locker.

If you have a discount tire in your area, they all sell slightly used tires for cheap. In fact, all tire stores do. I bought a set of BFG AT's 265/75/16 for $200 that have 75% of the tread left. But, I put on the CB lift and tires at the same time. If you buy the 245's before the lift, you might decide later you want bigger tires. So, together for tires and lift I spent under $400. just a thought.

Rick - Where can you find used OME shocks and springs?

Joseph - That sounds like a good deal.. one question tho, what is a CB lift?

I too have a 98 D1 in the same predicament :-)

Sounds like this is not as clear cut as one would think. Thanks guys for the suggestions. Ive just found a local guy that has a set of BFG ATs of a Jeep Cherokee that have about 5K on them. He said they are 245/70/16s and would take $250. He is going with the GY MTRs. I will most like take them and then begin a lift fund. Thanks for the suggestions friends.

dave,
a CB lift:
move your stock rear springs to the front and buy a set of rear springs, using your stock shocks.
your into the lift $130 for new springs, cheaper for used.
call GBR, Bill has a few sets of used springs i was rummaging through on friday.

speaking of tires, I cam across this - http://www.atlanticbritish.com/ProductList.asp?Category=ALL&Vehicle=D1&PerPage=1 &ListType=DETAIL&PartNumber=9638K is it a good price? Also, how long should I expect the tires to last? Thanks.

I would call GBR, but at this point, I owe too much $ on my truck to upgrade right now. Lets call this the "research phase"

245/70 vs. 235/70 is not much in the way of an increase for ground clearance! I would like to suggest removing the front air dam, install a front and rear diff guard, (Rovertym are simple and durable)and fit a more agressive tire. A standard Disco with a functioning diff lock and better traction will go a long way. I am very fond of the Yokohama Geolandar or Bridgestone REVO AT's or the Kumho Mud Terrain. Just my 2 cents.

I found myself in the same position when I first got my Disco. I went with the tires first. Yea, it was a bit squatted........but the traction was improved. If I had to do it again, I would do it the same way. My .05 cents.>JB
