Hi All

so i went wheeling this weekend and i managed to rip off my passenger side rear bumper end cap, plus my drivers side end cap has been hanging on by a shoe string (the bumper itself is okay/no smiling yet)

anyway, i was contemplating my options:

1. replace the end caps
1a. does anyone know a good/cheap source for end caps

2. get an aftermarket bumper
2a. what are my choices?
2b. for those of you that have an aftermarket, what are you impressions of them

the only one i've seen bumper ive seen online so far is TJM. it "looks" okay but are there any others?

thanks

KEN

But Jack you have to go to Rockware for them to make it for your D1, they don't make them taht you can ship.

I love that bumper. I plan on building one myself that's somewhat like it. I'll just have to wait a year or two, when I have time...

Ken,

Take a look at www.rovertym.com

Steve has some nice bumpers, and he'll make it the way you want it.

THanks for the input...

it sounds like the rockware is out of the question since its custom built...

so is there anyone who has either the Rovertym or the TJM on their DI??

how tough are they?
are they really better then the stock? (aka worth the money?)
what are the observed weak points of either?

thx

KEN

Thats one of the reasons I didn't follow you up that hill Ken. I don't want my rear bumper looking like yours.

Trek makes one as well, just don't know anything about it. There is also one on the SG website. I'm leaning towards it eventually for my DII because of the integrated hitch.

I am using the Rovertym rear bumper. I like the fit and finish and it required minimal mod for installation. It also hides the unsightlness of the rear corner panel ends with its bumper cap looking ends. I have also put that thing through hell and it asks for more.

Look on Ebay or here for great used bumper deals.
I just got an ARB winch bumper for $300.00!
Looks great but it is now time for a lift.

Ken, I have been looking at the TJM rear bumper myself and I like it alot but if you are going off road and hitting the stock bumper the TJM will really hit because it sticks out more in the rear. Just my thoughts.

for the money that steve charges for the RTE rear bumper, you can't go wrong. i've got one on my D1, you'd be hard pressed to find a better constructed bumper.
don't waste your time with the TJM crap, as they are only a slight upgrade from stock (IMO).

Ken - for a quick fix those end caps are pretty cheap. I bought them from roverconnection.com for about $28. FWIW I'm not advocating buying from roverconnection. I'm in the process of shopping for new bumpers too - or I may just build them. But if you drive your rig to work and stuff those end caps are nice to have so you don't snag your pants.

The goods about the TJM. You do not have to cut the rear quarter panel, you maintain your stock look, and it is more stout than the stock(just ask). The downs - Sticks out further so your departure angle is worst(more ground contact with the gas tank) and no protection for the rear quarter panel. If you want overall protection for offroading, spend a few more bucks and go with the RTE, Rovertym, or travel and get the Rockware.

I like the look of the Rockware tube style but it looks a little more fragile. Does anyone have any thoughts? I was thinking of building one since driving half way across the country is out of the question. I'm not sure what size of steel tubing to use. I want it to be sturdy but keep the weight down as much as possible. I tried to e-mail Alan Stuart but didn't get a response. Is he still a D-Webber?

Rhodes,
How do you get "more ground contact with the gas tank" because the bumper sticks out more?

Surely you meant more ground contact with the bumper (on departures) because the bumper sticks out more?

What are everyone's thoughts about the Safari Guard rear bumper? I like that it has the receiver hitch option.

There is also Aedofab. www.aedofab.com Pretty utilitarian, but you get a bumper with skidplate, receiver, and optional lights for about $1000. I've had one for the past year - no problems at all.

between Aedofab and Rovertym, from a cosmetic standpoint, I think they are about the same.
I have no idea if Rovertym has out-engineered the others, but I bet he has.

Kaymar rear bumpers look pretty good. Haven't got to personally check one out yet. www.atlanticbritish.com has them for about $799 i think. Diamond plated foot pad and integrated hitch. Looks similar to the TJM rear bumper. Keeps your stock lights in the exact spots, it has the same dimensions as the stock bumper but doesn't have plastic end caps.

The Rovertym bumper keeps your stock factory hitch.

It seems the SG rear bumper with the built in hitch would improve your departure angle. Is it rated the same as the stock hitch?

Well, your stock hitch is a class 3 where as their weld in hitch for the disco is only a class 2. So I would say no it's not as strong. However, you can also get an SG rear bumper and also still keep your factory hitch. However, the SG bumper is $1150 without the gas tank skid, $1525 with the skid. Rovertym's is only $725.. Leaves you $800 to get a gas tank skid if you want one. I have a Rockware gas tank skid ($325) and I love it. So for $1050 you could get a nice bumper and skid plate and still have $475 left for some thing else. Of course you'll also have to consider shipping which I'm sure it would cost less from SG since you are in CA and Rovertym is in VA. If it was my money I'd get the Rovertym bumper because it's strong, looks nice, and is cheaper.

I do like the Rovertym bumper, but they only have one for the DI, not DII.
