On my way to go wheelin today, with a half tank of gas going up hill @ 70mph, i would lose power for about three sec. and then back to normal. I filled my tank and it became more frequent about every 3 sec. it would lose power and recover only to lose power again. Check engine light came on. I went wheelin for about an hour with no problems. Drove home and had it happen one time, deceleration @ 45mph. I have replaced the stepper motor, plugs(champion RN12YC), wires, fuel filter and used B-12 Chemtool(like SeaFoam) twice in the tank and once in crankcase. After wheelin i asked my friend to use his OBDII reader and we got code p1316. Any suggestions on what to do next?

are you only getting the p1316 excessive emissions due to misfire code? it's usally coupled with the p0300 random multiple misfire code. there is varying discussions about this. do a search in the archives.

yep only the p1316 code. I have searched the archives and have found some info on 96D1 with the p1316. I have a 97 D1 5sp. I have had the p0300 code as well but not this time. The problem has come back even with what I have done and I am just wanting some opinions on what to try next.

well, what i have been lead to believe is that the reason i get the codes is that i more than likely need a valve job. i am fighting that conclusion as much as i can by replacing items and cleaning and doing basically what you have done. but it is probably inevitable.

if anyone else has some further suggestions im sure we'd both like to hear them.

I have heard that carbon cleaning from a machine only cleans the intake valves, not the exhaust valves, is that true? Also if the chip upgrade solves the problem of carbon build up, would it help for the carbon already on the valves?

A quick update. I payed $99 to get a carbon clean out from a local shop and went on a 400mile trip. No hesitation and more power on the hills (hwy 101).

Next time I wil try this:
Take an empty 2 liter pop bottle and poke a SMALL hole in the bottom on the side and another small vent hole it the top. Fill the bottle with water and block the vent hole. Remove the air filter from the car. Now start the car and hold it at a fast idle. Release the vent hole and dribble the water into the intake. Carefully, as too much water will stall the motor. Run through the entire 2 liter and virtually all the carbon will be gone.

Why this works: Carbon is water soluble. The water turns to steam in the combustion chamber and virtually pressure washes the cylinder.

No valve job, 2liter pop $1.
