I bought a 97 disco se recently and want to replace the spark plugs and wires. What do you guys recommend me using? also i'm getting really bad gas mileage, around 10 mpg. I've changed the air filter and thermostat, and that really didn't do much. and suggestions?
thanks
anthony

I would use the OEM plugs and magnacore wires. Check some of the vendors in the vendors section and I am sure you will be able to find both. Magnacore seems a pretty popular way to go.

Oh and Anthony, 10 mpg sounds a little low, but not unheard of. Do you have any modifications? Check your converters and maybe your o2 sensors. You should at least be using midgrade fuel. I use the premium but I think you can get away with midgrade as long as you run a cleaner through your tank every couple thousand miles. Either way, my mileage got better when I recently replaced the plugs.

Get the 8mm, they are just a few bucks more than the 7mm. I dont see a need for the 8.5mm.

Does the check engine light come on self test? Someone may have pulled the bulb and you could have a CEL on. That would cause the bad mileage. Also a bad O2 but that would likely throw a code.

Get the 8mm wires, a little harder to get into the stock wire looms but will still work.

You can get them here:

http://www.apexperformance.net/ ($62 shipped, they don't have them listed on the website, call them and give them the part number)

and here:

Ron, On my 97 the if the ECM throws a code the check engine light stays lit. I have to hook up the laptop and clear the code to turn off the light. It does sound like there is a code, that is the only time I have gotten mileage that bad without a trailer behind me. Even with my elevated oil consumption, I still get 17+ mpg and that is with 85 octane gas. I would guess that someone may have disabled the light if he has mileage that bad and no code, I suppose there is a chance it is a marginal O2 sensor, but I would bet there are some other code faults.

I got 8.5 mm Magnacor wires from Apexperformance for 96.11 with shipping and handling to my door....

I would call them up and see what kind of a deal they can offer you.

Kris, the bulb will stay lit, as long as there is a bulb. Ron's asking if when he turns the car on, the check engine light briefly illuminates (during the vehicle's bulb test). If it doesn't, he's got a problem.
...and Kris, you're getting much better than average MPG.

I have to blame my wife for the mileage. I have to take it now and then to blow the carbon out, she has a really light foot. I see what he was saying, the self test when the key is turned. OOPs should have seen that.
