I've had this debate with many drivers throughout my career and, since you all seem so knowledgeable (even the chicks), I'd like to introduce it here for Disco-sion. If you know you will be at a stop for a certain amount of time, do you select neutral and the parking brake while you sit and drink your travel-cup latte? Or, do you hold the brake and/or clutch pedals during the wait? Object here is to pick the method that will minimize the wear and tear on transmission parts. Which method will make the trans last longer? Things to ponder: This can apply to auto and manual where one method may not work for both. Shifting in-and-out versus holding the shift position in both cases. Basically it's repetition versus constant loading. How long should the stopped time be before deciding? 30 seconds, 1 minute? I await your extremely educated responses... SandMan |

I guess the next arguement would be if LR really know whats best for their cars AND drivers. It says in the owners manual to put the auto in neutral if the truck is going to be sitting idle while driving (not verbatim, but worded similarly). It may save a few parts in a 100k miles, but I save more in sanity by not following this tip. |

Oh, and a manual shouldn't be in gear until you get ready to go. |

Devil's avocate... Thom - street light just turned red and you know it ain't your turn for over 1 minute. Still in gear waiting? Or in neutral for 50 seconds and then back in gear ready to go? Joesph... Does what LR suggest make the trans last longer? If so, shouldn't we follow that advice thus elongating the life of an expensive replacement part. Why leave an auto in gear and not the manual? Either one moves forward when the foot comes off! |

popular mechanics said it increased wear/tear by constantly shifting from drive to neutral. LR also says not to rotate your tires -- thats another "tip" i have trouble believing..... |

> street light:...always in gear ready to go as you should be! (I might be behind you ) Hmph. Here in Jersey most drivers use the green light as the signal to add more makeup / brew tea / etc. before they actually think about going anywhere. Someone taking the extra 1/2 second to clutch/declutch back into gear will still be considered fast. |
